Front door auto-close is a nuisance!

Our front door auto-close is a nuisance. The first stop is too close (I may be old (49) and tall (6’2”) and less limber than I used to be but I’m not fat.) to get out comfortably. The second stop is too far to open in most parking lots (other cars being parked too close) and anywhere in between results in auto-close. Is there any way to defeat this mechanism or purchase a smooth door lever arm (similar to the rear doors that don’t have auto-close) rather than what I imagine is a notched one on the front doors that has three stops or positions?

I supposed I should have done a search.
Thanks.
My Marriage is fine.
Hopefully auto-close will go the way of the trash-masher and 8-track tape.

Seriously, I know what you mean. I've been attacked by my door so many times. Wish I could just have a normal door that I can have open at any angle.

I checked out the parts list for the 2004 doorstop arm, and it is completely different from previous models of Acura cars, so it doesn't look like it is an easy replacement.

I also wish I had the old style one-stop in the middle arm, because everything is wrong with this new 2 stop design. Either doesn't stay open far enough or it is too far, and as said it closes too easily on the unsuspecting.

The mounting method for attaching the doorstop to the door is completely different for our cars. If someone could find an arm with one stop in it that was the same length as our two stop arm, it is possible that it could be mounted to the brackets that would fit our cars, but as far as a complete assembly being available, I'm afraid there probably isn't one.

Nah, Get gullwing doors. That would make the problem worse, but then at least you be justified in taking two parking spots.

Once you get used to opening the door and holding it until it "locks" in the first notch, you'll be alright.

But the first notch doesn't do any good because the door isn't open enough to get in or out. Unless you are a lot smaller than I am. Which most people are, but they are also having the weird door problem.

I can usually squeeze out in the first "notch" but the second is much easier...but in my garage, opening to the second notch would cause the door to hit something...this is frustrating to say the least so I hope Acura is listening to us little guys when we complain.

My 11 year old son says to me "Dad, I'm scared of your doors."

I actually like the feature, once I got used to it. Most of the time I open it to the 1 and half notch level, step outside, and can casually walk away while the door closes on itself and I hit the keyfob to arm it. You can sense the door about to slowly revert to the closing pulling motion, and just let it close behind you. For me, the 1st notch is usually enough to step out, 2nd notch is good if I need to bring my briefcase in w/ me from the driver side.

at times i like the auto-close... but when it comes to ramming me back into the driver seat and having to remind people about it so they don`t keep slammming your doors... in starts to work against me...
