Front brake replacement after 25k miles???? PLEASE HELP

Hi guys,

My car's at the dealership cuz I went through a HUGE pothole and crushed one of my mags.

They tell me my front brakes (6MT TL so Brembo) are 90% finished and that they have to replace the pads and the discs... They say they can't turn the discs.

Can someone confirm if this makes sense after 40,000km - 25,000miles?

They want $450 CDN for the job...

Please let me know as soon as possible, gotta let them know whether or not to do it. Thanks.

Rob

I was told that the brembo brakes are real expensive, like $500 US to replace with labor when I took the car in.

I dont see why the pads would be so expensive ($180) just for pads.........

at 25k miles you shouldnt need new brakes, unless you are real heavy on the brake pedal, you might have warped the disc, but even in that case, they should be able to just cut them instead of offering new ones...........

to cut a rotor (resurface) they charge $10 US per rotor in the US, thats without the labor to take them off...........so it shouldnt be too expensive to do. Also I dont know how hard the labor is on the brembo pad replacement...............

they are 4 piston calipers right?

Yup, 4-piston calipers... And they want $450CDN to replace the pads AND the discs... but I just don't see how the discs could need replacement already at only 25,000miles. Doesn't make sense does it? I think I'll take the car back and do it myself in a month. I'll get the Hawk pads that everyone is raving about and I'll check on the discs...

yea, its deff something you can do yourself, they were setting me up too, to be prepared to spend $500 on the brakes.........

I was like why?

I can buy the pads myself, and do the job in an hour or so.

Awesome, I'm convinced. I'll go buy the Hawk pads and do that. I doubt the rotors need changing already.

The rotors probably don't need to be replaced, but you should still take them somewhere and get them turned..

The dealership was telling me that because of the nature of the high-performance Brembos, the rotors can't be turned. Is his giving me a line? ARGH!

Here's a thread from the 3G Garage which might help when you get ready to do the replacement, plus it's has some comments on brake wear.

Thanks Ron, I'll check out my service manual when I do the pad switch. Now I'm trying to decide whether or not to find some rotors and change them at the same time. I don't want the new pads to wear prematurely because of the rotors being grooved. As for having the rotors turned, I could do that, but they told me it wasn't possible. I don't know who to believe.

Look on page 19-17 in your service manual or the link I gave above. It gives the measurements for the brake disc for the 6MT.

Standard is 24.9-25.1mm or 0.98=0.99"
Max refinishing limit is 23.0mm or .91"

So you have about 8/100" or 1/12" approximately to play with. Not much, but you don't have to take a lot off. It does say to use an on-car brake lathe, but you could check with the mechanics at the dealer and see what they say.

I replaced my brembos at 25,000miles exactlly. It is normal for these type of performance pads, especially if you are an aggessive driver. I intalled them myself however for a total spending of $125!
