This Friday

I'm finally going to get my Hids install in a local shop. I asked them if they sold relay harness and they said they did but it's only necessary for BMW and benz. They checked in there comp or book and they said my 08 tl type s didnt need it and if we in fact installed it my Hids won't work??

Your HIDs will work if you install a relay harness.

Tell them you want it installed.
Better safe than sorry!

I have a understanding of what a relay harness does? But would it be possible if you can a little bit more? And would I need to get anything else other than a relay harness?

fogs right? relay harness is all you need.

the current from your stocks is low, current from the HID's are high. the relay harness creates a nice balance so that you don't burn anything out.

Most shops that do HID installs aren't really professional. They don't offer you a harness or educate you on it. Much like the one you are taking your TL to.

You can have your call installed with your new HIDs without a harness and it should work just fine. But if one day you fry out all your electrical wiring in the car, it's because you didn't get a relay harness.

I highly recommend a relay harness. Prevents flickering and shorting your electrical system.

If you want to take the risk and get it installed without a relay harness than go for it. Just know that there is always a chance of it frying your electrical system. Worst case scenario the car will burn to the ground lol.

Don't let that amateur shop educate you about the relay harness. The part where he said he looked it up on the computer to see if your car needed a harness sounds like bull shit. What program or where is he looking it up to see if it needs a harness or not? He's probably lying to your face

--

Oh you said "he looked in his comp or book".... yup sounds like complete bullshit to me.

I agree with you guys after reading many post about it I'm actually the one that brought up the relay harness.. I actually do want to have that install. Does that mean a wire will be coming out of my battery?

no, the relay harness is attached to your new HID fog set up. its just a wire harness that goes in between.

I thought the relay harness does have the positive connected to the battery? That's how it draws current from the battery for start up? Or am I wrong and getting something mixed up?

From what i understand about relay harness. by adding a relay kit to power up the ballast, will not create bulb flickering, steady 14v from battery, basically a bypass kit for the power to flow straight from battery instead going through oem wiring is this information correct?

Relay Needed... You'll burn the 10Amp fuse powering your stock fogs now. Cable is not rated for 15amps which is whats recommended for HIDs. You shouldn't pay more than 20 bucks for a relay kit and even then i find it expensive as you can make your own for about 10. Yes a single cable will be connected to battery positive. and yes 14V, when car is on alternator provides around 14V usually 13.8-14.2 on a good day...

A relay is just an electrical switch. Its takes low current(.2-.5amps @ 12VDC) to turn on the circuit . The circuit is what needs the direct power from the battery and higher amperage .The average relay is usually good for 30Amps... so you connect the fog light + to the relay coil(switch) to turn on the relay which is connected to the battery + and your HID fogs. You also need a ground but thats just chassis
