First time Acura Owner!

Hi everyone my I'm Spence and I'm from delaware. I just got my first Acura and I love it so far. It's a 2006 TL with the technology package with 88k on it. I got it for $11,800 otd, traded in my 00 Eclipse. (Was this a good deal? I kinda think it was). So far I'm excited to spend a few years with this baby. I do have one question to start of with, is there normal a little delay in acceleration when pressing the gas pedal, it kinda feels like theres is a lag. I was told getting the oil changed and using a fuel injector fluid could help since the dealer probably hasn't done it in a while. What do you guys think? This could just be normal, I've never driven a car like this, my eclipse did have a V6 but the pedal response seemed better.

Welcome to the thunderdome!

I wouldnt use a fuel injector cleaner.

this car is DBW, so if you're not accustomed to it, it might feel like a lag.

Yeah dude. It takes awhile for the turbo to kick in, thus, the lag you feel.

I'm just kidding. I don't know about AT as I normally drive MT. Congrats on the pick up and I'm sure you'll love the voice activated everything in that car. You may want to do a transmission flush and change out the pressure plates to see if that'll help with your acceleration issue. There's some great threads with pictures on this forum to help assist you if you're more of a DIYer.

Yes the car is drive by wire, but in all 4 TL's I have owned I never noticed any lag with the autos or manuals its instant go as soon as you touch the pedal. It could be your getting a lazy APP sensor, but then again if thats going bad the car might be doing other things as well. Either way its a cheap and easy change.
Basically, with any used car that you buy I would recommend a few things if it hasnt been done yet. If your unsure about the motor oil go ahead and change it. I like to use whats recommended which is 5w20. I personally use Mobile 1 synthetic in my Type S and an OEM filter. I get the 5qt jug from walmart. You can swap out the engine air filter and cabin filter with OEM filters. Make sure you use quality premium fuels. If you just got the car the previous owner or the dealership may have put regular grade fuel in which our TL's do not like. Lastly, if you want to get even more in-depth you would change the spark plugs. Its not reuiqred until 100K+, but it never hurts especially if you think the car might have some sort of issue or lag. I also recommend OEM NGK plugs for that as well.

Enjoy the car it looks nice and clean!!!

Ok I'll go ahead and do that, now I've never changed the oil on my car I usually go to the Valvoline place up the street from me, is there any recommendation for the oil they use? I used fully synthetic on my eclipse from Max Life I believe. Does the Acura use full synthetic also?

You can use either conventional or synthetic. It's a matter of preference. Most people who tend to hold onto their cars longer than a couple of years will go full synthetic.

Definitely full synthetic. I have great experiences with Mobil 1. Your car is worth the extra money for a oil change. It will thank you for it.

Now how hard is it to get to the oil tank because if its easy I can get someone to do it or i can learn. I pay about $80 a trip at valvoline and times are a little tight since I just got the car. Also is there a way to have the car seat memory on 1 before I get in so i dont have to keep switching. It defaults at 2. And to JT when I bought the car Requested a complimentary fill up and i didnt see what they put in the car. The salesman didnt know anything about the car being as that I got it from a BMW dealership so do you think he put regular in it?

jack the car up. the oil pan is very easy to get to.
the filter is one of the easiest to get to as well.

I presume you are using key number 2. so, when ever you unlock the car, it will always preset to memory number 2.
get keyfob 1!!!

its okay if the ran regular, but from here on out, please use 91 or better!

Ah ok, I gave my parents the other set of keys (no wonder my set was pristine and the other was a little worn). As far as the lag im feeling I gun down on the pedal it'll launch like a bat out of hell. Its just the initial touch like when pulling off from a stop sign or pulling out of a parking space that seems delayed. But i'll get the oil changed and fill it up to see if it changes slighty. What do you guys think about the price I paid for it? Was it good or am I just thinking that.

I agree,

Welcome and Congrats. Very wise people on this Forum. The BEST Car Forum in my opinion.

You will become almost an expert if you read alot on here. I know so much about Acura's I don't think I will buy another car for awhile. 04-08 TL Mostly 06-08 TL.

I would change ALL the fluids, filters, and the spark plugs, and probably good quality spark plug wires, wont hurt for sure, and its not that expensive if you do it yourself. ANYTHING you dont know how to do, can be taught to you on Acurazine by reading.

If you have questions--There is a "SEARCH" box above, use that first so people dont get angry at you. But its no big deal. Welcome.

I would also consider changing the trans fluid. These are all just suggestions.

GOD BLESS and ENJOY

1) Each remote can be linked to the car and will automatically set the driver's seat, exterior mirrors, audio preferences and climate control preferences. Just set all the settings to your liking and link the Driver 2 remote.

2) The TL ECU is adaptive to driving patterns in addition to being DBW. You can perform an ECU reset (do a search with those terms to pull up the threads with the reset procedure) to see if that helps with the initial throttle response. However, the ECU will adapt to the main driver's driving style within a week or so.

Welcome to AZ.

Yeah those are some good recommendations as well. Some have talked about a method that resets the computers, but I dont know if anyone officially said it works. If you want to reset the car just undo the battery for a while. Make sure you have radio codes handy prior to doing this. Other settings such as radio stations should still be saved after the battery is pulled.

Your keyfobs say 1 or 2 on the back side depending on which one your using. If you dont want it to keep going to fob 2 when you get in, unlink that key with the car. The back of my keyfob for my 07 has instructions how to do it. That way the only way to change settings would be by pressing memory button 1 or 2. So if you press memory button 1 it will stay on memory 1 indefinetaly until you change something.

Im sure the complimentary fill up was with regular fuel. As Justnspace said its ok to run it with this fuel, but I would not go flooring the car all over the place until you get proper premium fuel in it. For us near Chicago we have 93 premium, other places use 91 as their premiums.

Oil changes are easy, but if you really have no experience with it I would still go get it done. $80 bucks seems very steep for an oil change, I would imagine the dealership is even a lot cheaper than that. You can use whatever oil you like, I personally prefer synthetic Mobile 1 5W20 and OEM filter.

As for the delay, I know you said from stop signs as well, but one other thing is on the automatic Honda/Acura transmissions, there is a lag for drive to engage when you shift the car to drive from either park, reverse, or neutral. Just wanted to mention this incase thats what your talking about. If its not that then disregard.

So if brought the oil to the vavoline place, would they change it for me still or do I have to use theirs. To me the delay is when its in drive and I accelerating from a stop. I have to press the pedal down farther to get some ooomf. On my dads 04 grand prix just a little tap of the pedal gives you instantious reponse. Would this be the dbw?

Welcome to the Money Pit Spence.

You will find a lot of info here and a lot of helpful folks.

For a new-to-you car I recommend you do the following:

Swap out the filters. Dealerships hardly ever do those. There are DIY's on how to do it in the link below:

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/3g-tl-garage-faq-3g-tl-newbies-553554/

Replace the transmission fluid. Again....there are a lot of threads on how to do it and different fluid options.

If there are no service records I would consider doing the brake fluid an PS fluid as well.

Don't do any fuel injector cleaners - they are really not designed for our cars. You will get used to the DBW. It sucks.

For oil I use Mobil 1. Oil changes are a piece of cake on these cars. I call it a 2-beer job.

Hi,

I got this from another forum and it works for a lot of people including me.

The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving
style. Do a TBA Throttle body adaptation.

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.

2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter
turns over.

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back
to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas
pedal.

5. Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment.

6. Drive the car as you always do.

Key on, pedal down, 5 sec, key off pedal up, wait 2
minutes.

Keep the key in for the entire thing.

i actually had the same prob when first i got my 05 5AT, i believe the car has adapted to the previous owner's driving habit, it will take a while to get used to yours. I reset the ecu by using the method of pressing gas pedal (there was a thread about it, try to search a bit), it somewhat helped a bit but still some lags, its been about 3 months since i had the car, i noticed the lagging kinda disappeared and the car has finally adapted to my driving habit..!!!

I'm in the car now attEmpting to reset the ecu, when turning the key back it would only go back to the position which leaves your radio on, is that ok?

I had my radio off, i always turn it off before i get out of my car, dunno if that makes any difference in terms of how it will affect resetting the ecu, anyway i copied the info for you below, happy resetting

"The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving

6. Drive the car as you always do.

Depending on your driving style, this may or may not be a big factor. I do a lot of city driving so
I noticed a big change after erasing my history. It is not hard to do this, just follow the instructions -

Key on, pedal down, 5 sec, key off pedal up, wait 2
minutes.

Keep the key in for the entire thing.

Seems to work on mine."

Update on the car, did the reset, seems to be a tiny bit more responsive. Also got the oil changed, I used the vavoline maxlife synthetic blend. The car def. kicked on a lot faster, must have been hungry lol. I'll probably just have to get used to the response, it probably doesn't help that I use my toe on the pedal instead of my whole foot that might be half the reason right there.
