2+ weeks in the shop

So my car has been in the shop for 2 weeks n 1 day. I took it in cuz there was a whine coming from the transmission. Possibly a bearing on or near the half-shaft( that's what I told the dealer I thought). What ever it was would get louder the faster you go. The same sound came from my 04 Titan before the rear-end had to get replaced.

The dealer took apart the tranny and found one of the inner bearings was shot and there was groove worn in the housing. they also conned me into replacing my clutch, fly wheel and TO bearing ($1,025). they finally got it put back together yesterday, and it still makes the same noise. wtf? they say they need it till at least friday now. I don't object to rackin up the miles on their loaner, but enuff is enuff! I miss my car!

Do you have any input on what the problem could be?

Is it a whine or more of a growl?
Could be wheel bearing?

its definitely a whine. when u let of the gas, it kinda deminishes. it is most audible between 40 and 50 mph.

Does it matter what gear you are in?
And does it change when you turn?

you can hear in every gear. the least in 6th just cuz the air moving is too loud. when u put the clutch in to shift, the whine stops. i think that why the dealer took apart the tranny. ive heard this whine on other vehicles (RWD) and it was the differential that was bad. those vehicles were automatics though.

Does it change with engine speed or vehicle speed?

the dealer replaced the TO bearing, clutch, flywheel, inner trans bearings, and the trans housing.
as of yesterday evening they are pullin out the trans and takin it apart again. "maybe its somethin we did, who knows? but we need to pull it apart again"

i asked him about the bearings on the halfshaft and he said no
i said maybe its a wheel bearing, he said "i doubt it"
well, did you check the wheel bearing? "no i dont think thats it."

its honestly hard for me to remember exactly how the sound was, cuz i havent even seen my car in more than 2 weeks. i dont think it increased with speed, i think it was a constant whine that got higher pitched as speed increased.

he says it will be ready today or tomorrow, but disassemble and reassemble a tranny in a day? im kinda worried the will do this too fast.

maybe i should call ACS, do you think that will help?

ok so here is the latest from the dealer.......

he said the car was "singing", not whining anymore.... getting louder as speed increased

it needs new ring gears and a countershaft.

the countershaft, however, is on "National Back-order"

the part wont be in till the 21st, that will make it a full 4 weeks in the shop.
they put a "rush" on it cuz the car cant move without it

i think they should have just replaced the whole tranny and it wouldve been easier and possibly cheaper. i will have a new/rebuilt trans by the time they are done (part by part). its not costin me anything, aside form the clutch parts, so i cant really complain. just miss my car

Finally got my car back!!

after 33 days at the stealership, it was long awaited!! they replaced nearly every piece inside the MT. Bearings, countershaft, synchros, and the housing to name a few (warranty). they also put in a new clutch, flywheel, and pilot bearing ($1,000). It shifts and drives much better now!

After driving an 07 AT for 33 days, I noticed a few differences upon getting in my car. The 07 HUD is in the center guage instead of on the right like in 04, the radio and heater LCD is much nicer in 07 (the one in 04 looks really cheesy now), the controls for HUD are on the steering wheel in 07, the 07 has way less body roll, and the steering in 07 is much stiffer.

I'm sure everybody knows all this already, but I got so used to it I forgot what my car was like. It felt like a totally different car. I still love my car, I was just amazed at the refinement of the newer TL.
