Filling up Gas Question

Since Prices seem to go up and down all the time. Its expensive to fill up at times when yuor traveling. Driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, gas prices for 91 OC is about $2.90 a gallon. My question: IS IT OK TO USE 87 OCTANE IN THE TL? WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO?

Thanks! jt

i believe that it is OK, so long as your engine does not rough idle or ping when you shut engine. i have 2002 BMW 530 (waiting on a 05 TL) and always use 87 w/ no issue. High altitiuder's may have diffeernet opinion. I am in NJ.

This is a . The short answer, just use premium in the car and keep it happy.

i'd say not ok for traveling, emergency yes, but not for traveling. your ecu will try to adjust, but my guess is it cannot compensate that much, hence why premium is the only octane recommended. it's really a octane/compression issue.

Hi, and welcome to the site, johnboy99. Your question is frequently asked and is answered in the 3G Garage at the top of the 3G TL forum page. The following link answers your question with some precision (just scroll down...) I recently traveled and can also attest to how expensive 91 and 93 are.
