Facing downhill with car in reverse
This might be a stupid question, but I was wondering:
When facing downhill, does your 3G 5AT (I'm assuming 6MT would apply too, but I could be wrong) roll down the hill when in reverse?
I know the car won't roll back down when facing up a hill and in reverse, but I was wondering if the same principle holds when facing downhill.

if its steep enough it it will roll no matter what direction your pointed or what gear your in if your foot isnt on the brake

The only way a car is going to roll downhill when in reverse with a manual transmission and the clutch engaged, is if the engine dies and the hill is steep enough to overcome the engine's compression through very low gear ratios.

Most owners manuals I've read say to put the car in reverse and put the parking brake on no matter what direction you are facing. I think reverse is the shortest gear and therefore harder to move in that gear? ??? Could be wrong...

Yeah, this was in SF... Close to Betelnut Restaurant on Union street. I think some hills are so steep that putting the ebrake on is a must.

Best gear to use in a manual transmission as an aid to parking is 1st gear. And never apply the e-brake very hard unless you need to do so. A light touch is always best (except in special situations).

You know, I kinda wonder if this caused a tiny bit of damage to my car, because now I hear a squeaking noise during moderate to heavy braking (normal braking, not e-braking). The sound is similar to when the brake pads are out, which can't be the case with only 13,500 miles. I've probably braked hard only like less than 5-8 times since I bought the car...
