Extended warranty... worth getting??

I just bought my 07 TL-S with 31,000 miles from an Acurazine member, and I was wondering if I should get an extended warranty. The dealer said the sooner I buy the warranty the cheaper it would be.

I really don't have too much info on this, and haven't had any luck with search function. If somebody could give me some info or point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it

I believe you need to wait until your Acura warranty is about to expire to buy a Acura Care warranty online. A 5 year, 60,000 mile plan with zero deductible is $ 1,285. from an online dealer. This plan goes into effect on the date of purchase....your TL is only 2 years old.

A local Acura dealer may be able to get into a plan today that takes into effect right after the 4/50k warranty expires.

I'm currently covered under the 5/60K, but they mentioned getting one up to 100K (or possibly even 120K). Thanks I'll get ahold of Tim and see what quotes I get.

I would say "Go for it".

Tim is the best when it comes to customer service and professionalism.

My factory warranty (2005-TL) expires in June-July and I have the following recommended by Tim :

4 years 48,000 - $1150.00

Wrong.

Your extended warranty is a continuation once your Factory warranty is expired. You buy now, you save now.

Lets just put as a life insurance and retirement finance. The earlier you sign up the cheaper. Its almost like an investment, until you get your service back or that's what I was told.

Extended warranty becomes effective from the date of purchase, right?
And We are only allowed to purchase it when the car is still under factory warranty. (48 months/50,000miles)
Which means it's better to purchase the extended warranty right before the original factory warranty expires. (exp: 47months from the original purchase date/49,999miles on the odometer)

my car, 05 TL currently has 30,500 miles on it.
According to www.hondacuraworld.com, the best deal I can get is $100 deductible 60 months/60k miles for 2004 or newer with up to 40k miles on odometer $1,285

My best choice for saving money is wait till the end of my factory warranty period or till odometer shows 39,999 miles on it..

Correct me if I am wrong.

I bought mine, overpaid for it at the dealer, returned it and got a full refund. (it was $1090 for something like 6 years/75,000) I don't drive a whole lot so it's basically for 6 years. I guess I'll regret it if I ever need service in years 5 and 6 but it's a risk you have to take.

It's one of those things where you won't need it if you buy it and you will regret not getting if you don't.

Just go into the dealer before 4 years is up and before 40k and ask to have everything fixed...

I think this is a mistake. You are gambling that at least two of the ac, navi console and transmission will go out before 100k miles. Why not take the conservative route and gamble that only one of those will fail, costing you less to fix than the price of extending your warranty? I extended mine and I feel like an idiot for doing so. Wish I would have saved my money.

Save your money! A lot of stuff has to break in that time for you to even break even... It a Honda, not Mercedes so it should be reliable.

Hell my dealership offered me a free life time powertrain warranty if I just got my oil changed there for life, I said F it.

I am inclined to agree with the last poster.

I have noticed people on acurazine seem really eager to always recommend extended warranty to everyone whenever this topic comes up.

I recommend it. Its ultimately upto individual preferrence. Anytime something goes wrong..you wont have to break your head saying "damn it..oh shxt". Depends on how much your peace-of-mind is worth to you.

I got a Sony big screen for $3K and paid $360 for a 4-year service plan. Its been 2 years since and now I feel like kicking myself in the rear.

But with a car..its a whole different gamble.

I paid like $1200 for 7yr/100k.. They didn't have 120k at the time, but if they did, I would've gotten it.. I'm burning through the miles waaaaaaaaay quick... 83k miles in 4 years.

How many have had to have major repairs done on their extended warranties? I've bought them on a couple of vehicles that I've owned and they paid off, but the main reason I bought an Acura was because they're supposed to be dependable.

I'm on the side with those who say get it - it's just insurance. Nothing is easy or cheap to fix on these cars. 2 relatively minor repairs after 50K miles(which is when things might break) and the warranty has paid for itself. Tim has excellent prices, but I saved a few bucks by checking a couple of other spots (Bernardi, Curry). Make sure you get AcuraCare. I think I got my $0 deductible warranty for about $1300 - I'm covered until 2013 for 118K miles. Is it absolutely necessary? No - it's just peace of mind. I live in NYC which is kind of hard (weather-wise and road-wise) on cars so I chose to get it.

Wow, I didn't realize Tim sold the extended warranty too. I got mine from the dealership the day I bought my Type S.

when a couple buttons stopped lighting on my dash (passenger side temp control), it was around $300 something with labor covered under warranty. i can only imagine how much something much more than burnt out bulbs would cost.

im getting an extended warranty on my car. a few minor hiccups (not necessarily a major repair) here and there will more than cover the cost of doing extended warranty coverage on the car.

Here's how I look at it. The service contract is insurance against having to pay for repairs (that are "covered") that come up during the life of the contract. Acura is betting that they won't have to pay out more in repairs than the cost of the contract, and I can guarantee you that they've researched the heck out it when they set the price of the contract. If they were losing money on the deal, you wouldn't be getting an extended warranty for $1200.

Yes that's true, but you can say the same about insurance. While the company makes the offer based on statistical data, you may want to protect yourself from unusual, but very expensive, repairs.

I wouldn't fault anyone for buying one, if it gives you piece of mind then by all means get it. Especially if a major repair will put a serious damper on your financial well being.

To me there is a big difference between insurance for car maintenance and other things that we have insurance on. If our car brakes down you're not going to lose everything you own like you could if you got in an accident with your car and someone was seriously injured.

If I were to buy the extended warranty, I've already hedged $1200 + $100 deductable towards corrective repairs. I'm of the mindset that if you properly maintain your car you won't have to spend anywhere near that amount in corrective maintenance. Additionaly, you can save yourself a butt ton of money by not taking your car to the dealer to have everything fixed. I have an outstanding mechanic and he charges about 1/3 what the dealer does for the same work.

Agreed - I also believe that proper maintenance can prevent most major mechanical issues. And yes, using an outside mechanic can save you major $$ if you can find a good one. But, OTOH, what maintenance can prevent the bulbs in the steering wheel from blowing out? What can prevent struts and springs from going bad when you're driving horrible streets everyday for 4-5 years? Or to prevent your alternator from going bad? These relatively minor repairs (compared to tranny or engine issues) can easily run into big $$. These minor, in most cases, unavoidable issues are the reason I spent the $1300 for the $0 deductible warranty. Case in point, I bought an ESP (for $1200) for my 04 MDX (bought Nov 03) which expires this coming Nov 09. Last April, with 45K miles on the clock, the alternator died. Cost to replace = $650 if I didn't have the warranty, not to mention the loaner car I had for 2 days. Currently, the leather driver seat has a burn mark from the seat heater malfunctioning and the seat heater itself isn't working and there is something rattling under the car, probably a loose or broken heat shield. Wanna bet those repairs would come up to more than the remaining $550 to cover the cost of the ESP?

The service plan covers bulbs, struts and springs? I would think those would be considered wear and tear items.

I'm kind of in the same boat...I have an 05 and my warranty will run out in the next few months.

I'm just thinking...what would I need to bring my car in for that I havent already? In the 4 years, i've done the recalls, had them look at minor creaks and superficial issues that bothered me...nothing else.

question - Will the recalls still be covered after the warranty runs out?
I imagine there probably wont be anymore that will pop up...

by the time the engine or transmission dies, the car will be too old for me to worry about it...thats why hondas are great.

for a little more than half the price of the extended warranty, I bought a 96 civic hatch with 280K miles...still running strong after a year. I needed a beater car to lug things around and to drive if I know I'm going to an unsafe area...
I actually drive that a lot more because its so conveient and I dont have to care where I park...any parking space up close that will barely fit the car, i'm going in...
its great!!
I still love my TL and am in constant mod mode but you cant deny the convenience of having a car you dont care about I got rammed by a deer driving from my mom's and i'm like...wow, that was crazy. If it were my TL, I would have started weeping on the spot.

I'm not sure how i got to this point, but basically...save your money unless you have extra

recalls are always honored and covered, regardless if you are in or outside of your warranty period.

I will call Tim also.
I asked the dealer here in brooklyn and was told 1300 for two year.
The cars is an 07 for with 76k miles.
I am thinking about getting it because i am not original owner and dont know how the prior owner maintained the car.

Its still money that you most of us don't want to spend. The thing that i am worried are the tranny and some of the electronics. Also if i dont have warranty i would not go to the dealer for repairs.

The prices of the warranties are calculated by the risk the ins company takes. Some car may have the bad luck in having more repairs than other and some cars will not have as many.

My brother has an BMW 540 and he paid 3 k for the two years.

So the reason the cost of the warranty is lower is that hondas have less repairs and cost less on parts also.

I personally wouldn't buy one. These cars are reliable and most problems you will have after warranty will be mostly wear and tear which will probably not be covered by the extended warranty.

My bmw on the other hand...anyone that drives an European car would be a fool if they didn't buy an extended warranty. It pays for itself the year after original warranty expires.
