Extended Warranty Worth $3000?

I just put a deposit on a 2004 TL Nav, 6mt with 50k on it for $20k out the door. Is the Acura extended warranty worth $3000? Its not really in my budget and I have my own mechanic. Not to mention I get Acura parts at wholesale. Input would be greatly appriciated!!

It would not be worth it even if you did not have a mechanic or get your parts at wholesale. It sounds like your pretty set if something goes wrong. If you are buying a car that needs an extended warranty than you are probably buying the wrong car.

$3000 seems way overpriced. Since you have your own mechanic and can get wholesale prices, I would bother.

If you are determined to have a warranty buy it from an online Acura dealer. A few advertise on this site and there are various threads.

Even if it was $1100, would you still buy it?

Depends on your risk tolarence. I bought new so know my cars history. Plus I can afford unschedluded major repairs if necessary. I'll self insure, no extended warranty for me.

If you plan to keep the car for many miles and are somewhat financially insecure and must have the car running all the time, perhaps your solution should be different. OTOH, if I was describing me like that, I'd be looking at a new Civic or Accord. :shakehead

i bought an 04 6MT w/ Navi last nov with 49k for about the same, and i ended up getting the extended thru curry acura care (online dealer). It only set me back about 1200 (w/ 0 deductible).

Personally, i bought it cuz i was the second owner and wanted that little peace of mind. Plus, i felt that if i sell it in the near future, it would be a nice "feature" to up the asking price (ever so slightly). I'm not "financially insecure" and i still copped it soooo

If you can swing it and would personally be more comfortable with it, i say go for it.

I bought my '06 new and in the past I've always purchased the extended warranties on my GM vehicles. The Service Tech told me I shouldn't get it on the Acura - that I wouldn't need it... So, who knows but I didn't get it. I've had the car a year and a half and not issues whatsoever.

They are trying to rape you!!!!! Don't pay more than $1000.

I never retired a Honda product with under 150000 miles so for me it was a no brainer to get it.

If the car has 50k on it, the wrap warranty would take it out to 100K. The original owner had a 50K warranty (and probably paid close to MSRP for the car in 04). If you can have 50k of warranty and pay $12000 less than they did for the car, it sounds like a good deal to me.

Who's they?

I understand your urgency to get the coverage "extended" before it expires, but a little birdy told me that the factory warranty had been extended 2K miles due to an odometer discrepancy on the 04's. Not sure how true this is, but it may give you some time to find a "good deal". My local dealer told me that the extension was true, so i took the time to shop around. 1200 was the best i found. Others have paid less for the same 48,48 coverage. I was satisfied with what i paid with no deductible. Once again, it depends on comfort level. If you're cool with 1700 plus a yard for a deductible, then hop on it doggone-it. You may be able to find better tho.
Try searching for threads specific to warranty info.

That's not a warranty, it's a service contract, not nearly as much coverage.

Tell them you want the Acura Care warranty and you want it for less than a 400% mark up (at $3000 that essentially what their mark up is).

The Acura Care is good at any Acura Dealer in the US, zero deductable.

Definitely get the AcuraCare warranty and best price will probably be online. It might run you $1500 at most. The way I think about it, if you have 1 major repair (tranny, suspension, electrical, engine), the warranty will instantly pay for itself. Hardly anything significant done at the dealer nowadays costs less than a grand. At $3000, they are trying to rape you... Sometimes when you tell them you get a better deal elsewhere, they'll negotiate better with you, otherwise give'em a ...

Go on line some of the Midwest Acura dealers are selling them cheap. Got mine for $1100 as well. I ran a copy of the package off and asked my dealer to match it, they did.

I think it's a waste of money. Nothing beats the factory 4yr warranty. After that one has to haggle with the extended warranty company and probably have to pay a deductible. Plus would it cover Nav, electric or wear and tear type problems? I don't know but $3K is too much. $1K is more reasonable but I'm sure there are even more restrictions, clauses and hoops one has to jump through. Just my $0.02

I was trying to negotiate with Acura of Auburn. I told them the initial numbers for the Curry Warranty and they were willing to match the price. Incidentally, Curry sent me an additional discount offer after i made the email inquiry. I brought that to Curry and they said they couldn't go that low. I even went as far as to ask the warranty manager at Auburn to review the coverage offered by the Curry warranty and compare it to the one they offered. I wanted her to tell me if their coverage offered anything that justified the higher price. In the end, she told me that the Curry warranty with Acura Care was the EXACT same as theirs and that i should buy the Curry one as it was the lower priced of the two.

You really need to go Here and review their pricing and coverage. At least with this info you can make a sound decision as well as try to reasonably negotiaite a fair price with them dudes in Boston. Don't let them rape you B.

in reference to extending the warranty while still under the original factory warranty, i said that there was an extension due to an odometer discrepancy. Here is the information that confirms that.

TSB INFO

Hope this helps

Black_dc2,
The dealers usually offer acuracare along with plans from other companies. Many will offer whichever one makes them the most profit. So, make sure it is acuracare. Also, the acuracare plan is universal and safe to purchase online from Curry and others.

in your OP you said that the car had 50k miles. I guess you either have to:

A. Pay what they are asking
B. Try to negotiate the price down
C. Try to find an acuracare vendor that WILL offer a warranty (if the dealer can do it, then someone else must be able to)
D. Get your deposit back and keep shopping

Good Luck
