Ever Heard of NON-refundable Deposit?

The dealer I'm getting my TL from wants a $1000 NON refundable deposit. Has anyone ever heard of this? I am definatly not going to throw down a thousand bucks I can't get back. Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's total BS man, that's his way of locking you in, I would suggest NOT doing that. Becaue as soon as you have done that, he can mark up the car 990 dollars and still say your getting a great deal...bad idea

do not do it, demand to not put down a deposit or have it in writing that it is refundable, otherwise go to another dealer

my dealer did that. even though it's BS, they can put that in writing in the contract. it was not a big deal for me, since i don't plan to change my mind (the TL is not delivered yet) and if something goes wrong, there is a way to get out of the mess. never pay deposit by check. always put it on your credit card. if deal goes south you can always roll back the transaction. dealers know that too and they won't play you if they know you can roll it back.

That is absolute garbage. The regional Acura rep should be made aware of this. Do NOT buy from these people, no matter how great the deal may seem. Paying a little more money but having the option of getting your money back is always better than possibly paying less money, but never seeing your $1000.00 again.

Like stated above, it is allowed if it's in the concract, however, if you tell them that you will go to another dealer im sure that will dissappear. G'luck!

I have heard of non-refundable deposits on a few occassions. This serves as protection for the dealer to prevent people from going through all the trouble of negotiating, etc. and wasting the dealer's time only to pull out before the deal is finalized. That said, if anyone is serious about buying the car, then I don't see why this is a big issue as long as the deposit is put down after price has been negotiated and put down in writing. Putting down a deposit just to be able to negotiate or take a car out for a test drive though is not right (well, maybe unless it were a Ferrari or something like that).

Non refundable! Not unless you've place a special order of some sort.

go somewhere else, when something sounds fishy from the dealer its probably pretty rotten already. i hate it when they come up with this BS to try to force you into a purchase.

I'm not going to pay the deposit. If they change their contract to refundable, thats a different story. Otherwise, I'll go to another dealer. There is another dealer in Chicago that is offering the car for only $100 more, so there are still options.

Just an update, talked to the GM, and they had no problem making it a REFUNDABLE deposit. So, now the wait begins. How long did it take those of you that ordered your cars to get them?

credit card

Definitely charge your card. As far as I heard state laws vary but I heard by law consumers have a right for a refund within a specified time frame.

Change of plans now...

After that shadyness, we decided to get the car from a dealer in York, PA. They ended up making a better deal, no shady deposit, and 5% tax. 3 weeks...

Can't always do that. The dealer I went with wouldn't take a credit card, but they gladly accepted a check. It's only $500 though AND it's refundable.

It is absolutely amazing how there are so many dealers selling the same products, yet the customer experience is completely different at each one!

Frustrating!

Frustrating? Here is frustrating: my local dealer had the EXACT car I wanted and wouldn't budge more than $600 off MSRP PLUS a $500 dealer fee. My home town dealer, Crown Acura of Richmond, BY FAR THE WORST DEAL I FOUND IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. (And I got about 30 quotes.) Tools. Can't wait to go there for service.

Pretty easy, do business with another dealer! Is it even legal where you are to have a non refundable deposit?

You can also try to convince them how serious you are about buying your TL...
