Emergency Stops

If you guys have ever had to make an emergency stop, to avoid getting into an accident, do you guys hear loud thuds?

Traffic stopped all of a sudden and so I hit my brakes expectingto rear end the lady in front of me, but my car was able to stop in time. While I was coming to a stop I just heard two thuds.
Is that normal?

The VSA detects when the driver attempts an emergency stop and applies additional pressure on the brakes. Not sure if this would cause a thud.

ABS engaging sounds almost like a metallic creaking sound.

can you provide that quote from the online owner book?
had not heard of vsa increasing the requested brake pressure

normally ABS will pulse the brake pedal rapidly as it applies and releases the offending wheel brake...in order to keep the wheels turning-- not skidding
Its design intent was Stomp and Steer, allowing you to hit the brakes and turn the wheel to avoid the accident.
On straight line stopping it modulates the brake pressure to a caliper or 2 only when the wheel speeds get out of synch

To see how it works and feels, throw some water on the street and drive thru it with one side of the car in the water- the other 2 wheels dry
Apply the brakes full- as hard as possible- 2 footed, as you go thru the water and tires lose traction, the abs will pump/pulse- the car should stop straight ahead with hands off the wheel (a description not a recommendation)
Newer cars have even more computor interaction

No Hal- this is all the brakes I want~

He's right about the car detecting an emergency stop.
It calculates how fast you press the pedal/how quickly you apply pressure. When it detects emergency braking it will apply full braking force.

But no, it was not a click it was definately thuds.

Brake Assist
Brake Assist comes standard on the TL. Its purpose is to help the driver apply full braking pressure in a "panic stop" situation. To do so, a microprocessor continually analyzes and "learns" the driver's normal braking habits.

In an emergency braking situation when the brakes are suddenly applied and partially released by the driver to avoid wheel lockup, brake assist helps the driver apply full braking force via the anti-lock actuator. A pressure sensor detects an increase in brake fluid pressure and activates the anti-lock braking system. Braking pressure is maintained momentarily after the driver's initial braking action unless the driver completely releases the brake pedal.

Don't know what the "thud" is though. You didn't have something in the trunk or center console did you?

No. I've heard it before when traffic on the freewaysuddenly stopped.
The thud sounds as if I actually hit the car or like thenose of the car hit the ground, which I doubt.

just throwing it out there, do you have tranny issues? When my old cl's tranny was on the way out,in a hard brake situation the tranny couldn't downshift fast enough and finally thumped into 1st or whatever gear. The whole car jumped like I hit something........

wow you gen3 have all sorts of cool tricks! thanks bearcat

So, its not actually an emergency braking system that activates, its IF you go sudden pressure then partial release, as if you were acting on feedback from the tires and trying to keep max braking while loosing traction..
the computer goes to ABS and pulses as needed- thinking you are in danger

Heard the car will brake one wheel if you get into a corner too hot or try something like a 4 lane change at speed on the ice~ also has throttle limiter
Technology! I have to actually drive my 01

As for brake noise- noise while braking - get to a shop for inspection
Could be something like sway bar end link or other part loose/broken

id think its possible to rip an OEM motor mount or tranny mount if going a decent speed and u smash the brakes and jerk to avoid an accident.
