I think the 'J-pipe' is from the close-coupled catalysts to the third catalyst - the 'two into one' pipe. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Looks like they've been doing a bit of work on their website too. There is an '04 TL section now and I happened to notice this in one of the directories...

the exhaust looks nice, takes getting used to the tip..if you guys dont like it, just cut off the stock tip and weld it in place of the new tip..it'll be even better b/c ppl wont know that u have an exhaust...ppl like my wife wouldnt notice

Sorry I like the shape of the current exhaust set-up. I wish they would have kept the current shape.

I can't believe it. A cat-back and the discussion is "how it looks"?? What about how it works? On a BMW board you would be flamed out for putting cosmetics first.

Well considering this is just a pic, there is no real basis to go off of for performance. No specs no dyno tests yet. The only thing we have at this point is looks, which IMHO looks horrible. One of the best exterior syling points of this car is the exhaust. It adds a high end sports car look, the Porche Cayenne comes to mind. It should be considered a sin to ditch the exhaust tips on this car. Again my opinion :P

This isn't a BMW board. But anyway, how it looks is important. The TL was designed with a level of refinement, and sticking 2 round chrome exhaust pipes out the back kind of kills that. I'm not going to put something ugly on the outside of my car because it performs better... that would be stupid. Huge fart cannons on riced out cars improve performance, but they look horrible and sound even worse. I'd consider that poor design choice on their behalf to be the wrong choice.

I'd really only consider the cat-back if it gave a sound similar to that of the Infiniti FX or something just as cool. And I'd probably end up sawing off those tips.

Keep in mind, it's just a pic - not attached to any products. If I were prototyping an exhaust for the 04, I would probably start with what worked for the 03. That's what this looks like. I think it's great to see that there are new products coming down the pipe for the 04 (pun intended). There is not an 04 exhaust system announced/released yet, so all of these posts are speculation. However, I'm sure CT would be interested to hear the desire from many of us to see the stock look retained.

Hey Guys, got thie email from Comptech.

We will have a couple different parts available but at this time we don't
have any prices set for the exhaust. We have plans to release a supercharger
kit towards the end of august. I have no other info on the supercharger at
this time. Please let me know if you have any other questions

They should definitely use the stock tips for exhaust.
I want to drive the car without people thinking it was modified.

Regarding the looks of the Comptech exhaust

Just a suggestion to those of you interested in the Comptech exhaust:

As it appears that a number of you feel that the stock exhaust tips far exceeds the Comptech prototype in pure looks, perhaps you should email/phone Comptech and let them know.

In doing so, you may suade them to actually design an exhaust tip that looks similar to the stock one, which also saves you the trouble of hacking off the Comptech and welding the stock one in place. Regardless, you're going to be paying the price posted by Comptech anyway when you purchase it...might as well have THEM do the work. An added bonus perhaps would be the option of selling the stock one in perfect shape, rather than having it all hacked up.

Just a suggestion though.

Great idea. Already done. I'm sure they love getting cards and letters from their fans.

I wonder how the exhaust would look without the A-Spec kit on.

daikon38,

Good tip. Did it. I would recommend that everyone that agrees should do this. So its not just Aegir and myself bugging Comptech.

BTW did anyone decide what a J-pipe is? Someone described a Y-pipe, but I don't think it is the same thing.

From Comptech: Thanks for the email. We have the springs available for the new TL.
Pricing on these springs run $239.00. I don't have any information on the exhaust system at this time. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Didn't you just do that for us?

Anyway, some people will prefer the aftermarket tips, whether they are round or not, just so everyone knows that they spent some money for an aftermarket part.

The bottom line is that they should offer the kit with choice of tips.

agree...

Why does it have to be round?
there are so many shapes designers could use for the tip...
I think this is an area that needs improvement.
