Do a search on "immobilizer". There are several threads there that will give you some info until someone with more knowledge about this subject replies.

You are slightly confused. On cars that have factory immoblizers and want to have remote start a bypass module is needed. This is were a key might be needed.

Not a Blowhole
What is the purpose of doing a remote start? it is not good for your engine to have it idle for long periods, especially in the cold, because unbuirnt fuel will wash past the rings and cause fuel dilution of the oil. It can also result in increased upper cylinder wear.
the best thing is to start your car, give it 15-30 seconds tops to let the oil pressure stabilize, then drive off, driving moderately for the first 15-20* minutes. It takes about that long for the oil to reach 200 degF, which is when the anti-wear additives in the oil begin to be most effective.
*that is for summer temps - it can take longer in very cold climates. The 5AT cars warm up faster because of the heat exchanger in the tranny which uses engine oil to cool its lubricant.

Its like a microwave, once you have it you will understand and can't go back! Getting in a cool car in the summer and warm car in the winter. Sure idling for 10 - 20 minutes... somethimes, usually just 30 sec to 1 min as you walk to the car. I will only buy cars with an AT and auto climate control so as to work well with remote start.
DEI owns the market, Viper, Python, Valet, all made by DEI. You want to spend the $$$ and get a two way remote (so you know the car has started)
