A dump truck gave me a nice present: windshield replacement

Which place do you guys use to replace windshields?

There are so many places on the web I don't know where to start.

I don't even know if I want the OEM glass installed because I have heard it chips/cracks pretty easily.

More to come.
It was in the stars though, nothing I could have done to avoid it.

It has been over 2 years since I have had this car, and I never thought I would go this long without getting a new windshield. I drive on one of the worst roads in NJ (287) everyday. The irony is this happened on a local one lane road.

No one was in front of me, but one dump truck passed me on the opposite side and I heard a bang, didn't even see the rock.
I have a 500 ded for comprehensive, so I might not even bother with insurance.
I believe this will cost me somewhere between 600 - 800.

I have heard that using comprehensive should not raise the premiums, but since I have a nice 550/6 month premium, I don't even want to touch that.
Okay, an update on the quotes I have been getting.

I called up several places which I googled, and I got a variety of estimates.

From safelite I got an estimate of 770 using their special glass, not OEM.
From my acura dealer I got an estimate of 770 for glass and 150 for install.
From glassone.com I got an estimate of 574 and they use OEM glass. But they said the OEM glass will not have any markings on it, like Honda in this case. I don't know if I buy that, what do you guys think? And why is this place so much cheaper with OEM glass?

Get OEM glass, it is coated for sound dampening.

try going through your insurance company if your comprehensive deductible is low and it covers windshields, then you won't have to shell out $770

Get the Contractor/Dump truck to pay for it... that's if you go the license plate for the dump truck... I used to pay for at least one windshield a month when I used to work for a contractor...

This happened to me a few months back. got it replaced for "free" through the insuarance company. They used PPG Sound Master. It is acoustically treated as well. After seeing both out of the car I noticed the Honda glass was much thinner but with a thicker inner lamination layer. The PPG had thicker glass and a thinner lamination layer. Overall I really haven't noticed a difference in sound. However, the metal stud attachment for the rear view mirror is slightly smaller, so if you touch the mirror the base moves ever so slightly. I also noticed a slight visual warping in the bottom half inch down by the VIN number. I don't know if my original was the same.

When they were originally ordering the glass they said it was the oem replacement. And if I wanted one with the Honda labeling on it versus PPG labeling, that sometimes they are in the warehouse but usually it could take up to three weeks to get one. They said it was the same just different labelling.....not true.

If I had it to do it again I'd wait the three weeks for the Honda Glass.

I have had windshield crack issues with trucks in the past and I have gotten plate numbers, CAL-T numbers and time/location/description of truck and driver and presented it to the company that owns the truck. In both cases, I was told that I need to either have video tape proof the object was from their truck or the object itself which can be matched to what they are hauling. If I do not have either item then they will not pay.
I then spoke to their insurance company and they said they are the ones who told the trucking company about the required proof.
So with that frustration, I called my insurance company and they told me that it is near impossible to get the trucking company to pay since I need to prove it was their property that caused the damage.
So pretty much you are on your own with the repair bill.

That is true... you do need proof... and patience....

In my situations, the incident happened within my construction zone and the person would actually stop his/her vehicle (still within my construction zone) and wait for a state/city police to file a report. The contractor is required to fill his/her own report of what happened because of safety issues ie. OSHA requirements. With those things done... All I asked the vehicle owner to do was submit me three estimates and the next day he/she had a check. Mainly because contractors have General Liability Insurance for the project and the DEDUCTIBLE is in the hundreds of thousands.... so no insurance claims would be filed by the contractor....

I once paid for a car to be completely repainted because some idiot threw/dropped a can of paint on the roadway within my construction zone... and that person got paint all over their car.....

Imagine having a log fly off a flatbed on the highway going 70mph and having no other choice but to run over it.

They need to find a way to secure thier f*cking cargo

Looks like what happened to me (though in a smaller scale) a few years ago, except it was a uhaul. I was getting on the freeway, and noticed the U-Haul in front of me had the back door wide open... Next thing I knew, a toolbox flew out, and bounced on the pavement. What looked like a ratched flew out of the toolbox, (which spilled tools everywhere), and nailed my windshield right in front of where my face was... Scared the crap out of me

If I could see where I was going, I would've chased the screwball down

Okay guys, need your help.

Getting the glass myself is not going to work out, after placing the order online, the shop calls me and tells me it will be an extra 100 bucks for shipping. Screw that.

Now I have called a bunch of local places, and I am down to two. Help me decide.

Place #1: 531 + tax using OEM glass ordered from the Acura dealer.
Place #2: 369 + tax using ABTECH glass, same as OEM manufacture, but not OEM glass. The glass does have an acoustic film layer just like the OEM glass.

What to do, what to do.....
