Thanks, I should have thought of that.

Ok, another dumb question; why did Acura build the 3.2 with a SOHC? Everyone else seems to have DOHC.

cost, reliability, less parts to go wrong is my guess.

Me and some on my coworkers were just talking about that. I was telling them that the VTEC on the TL only effects the intake valves and not the exhaust so you don't "feel" it as much as if it did both. One guy was saying it was probably like that because the TL only has one cam versus two. I didn't know enough to argue against it.

Cool

Well, The 2009 TL still has one cam. But the VTEC is for both intake - exhaust. So that blows that idea. Right? I thought that one cam was a little more torque at low RPM'S. I am wondering now myself. Where are all the brain's around here?

Perhaps the technology to do that with a SOHC engine wasn't perfected until 2009?

Doubt it. Honda has been building SOHC VTEC for ages. I would safely say the intake-only VTEC is for emission purposes.

I question if the 09 is still a ULEV?

Cool

It's just plain sportier. You can rev. it up and up. It's allot of fun. I would rather have one in the TL. But it's not just a sport Machine. Like the 2000 is. Lots of daily drivers chose the TL. My !

I believe Acura uses DOHC on their four cyclinder engines
and SOHC on their V6 engines

Most of Honda's four cylinders are SOHC's. The sportier models (S2000, Type-R's,...) get the DOHC which give more control and flexiblity with VTEC.

There was also a DOHC V6 from Honda, the NSX engine. But as far as I know all the other V6 road cars had SOHC designs.

All CRV's uses DOHC and all accords after 2003, even base models and numerous other honda models. Someone else could verify this!!!

Guess I haven't kept up with Honda four cylinders tech.
Yes the current Accords, CRV's, Element and S2000 use DOHC.

The US Civic's still use SOHC except for the Si which gets a DOHC motor.

Your buddy is right, that is the SOHC vs DOHC thing, but not iVTEC vs VTEC.
Somehow engineer managed to have VTEC function on both intake and exhaust valve on the new 09 TL, and it's SOHC!

Why not just make it turbo and then you don't need vtec at all?

When it comes to the 4 cylinder VTEC motors, the DOHC version made more power. For example, the D16Y8 SOHC VTEC engine of the 96-00 Civic EX made 128 HP. The B16A2 and A3 DOHC VTEC engine found in the Del Sol and 99-00 Civic Si made 160 HP. Same displacement, but the DOHC engine made more power. It's not necessarily because of the extra cam. Honda engineers designed the DOHC to be more powerful. Larger throttle bodies, intake runners, intake/exhaust ports and valves. They were also tuned more aggressively.

Another example is the F22 and F23 SOHC VTEC Accord/CL motors. They made 145 HP respectively, while the H22 DOHC VTEC motor made 200 HP.

Theoretically, SOHC engine could be as fast as their DOHC counterpart. It's unlikely however, since the aftermarket support is much greater for the DOHC engines. 200 whp B16's aren't uncommon. I've personally never seen a D16 get past 170 whp.

Even though the TL is sohc it stills had two cams one for each head "V6"
