hm well I have a 6sp so slightly diff.. but you want to max out your rpms. So the gear you want to be in is the one where your getting the most out of your rpms.. Mpt sure if that helps.

You got the right idea. Just hit the pedal to the floor when you wanna go fast. I don't think shifting yourself on the 2G TL makes that much of a difference.

Ah, gateshifting has been proven to deliver the best times. If you really want to get the most out of it you need to go ahead and shift in to the lowest gear possible. 2nd gens can even shift in to 1st at 30mph, I don't believe the 3rd gen allows that.

Think of it this way. If you have a MT, you don't keep it in 6th gear, punch it and then downshift. You downshift then punch it. In an AT by leaving it in D5 and then punching it you're wasting time waiting for the downshift and energy to build up. So downshift in anticipation of punching it. There's no waiting for the downshift and the energy is already built up.

This is one of the main reasons that I beat guys with faster cars . .

gate shifting will let you stay in first without having to worry about the car shifting to 2nd prematurely.

only 99's allow you to stay in 1st gear in SS mode

Sport Shift. It's the +/- on your gearbox.
