Door Tightening?

Has anyone attempted (and succeeded) at tightening the doors so that it requires a bit more force to open / close them?

I really like how Mercedes / BMW doors are somewhat stiff and require a bit more effort to open / close. the main reason is that it completely prevents people from SLAMMING your doors, which as we know, over time can cause all sorts of rattling and noise issues.

You could take apart the door hinges (involves taking off the door) and wash em out so there is no lubricant in there so it's harder to move (may make more noises)

hmmm...not sure I want to get that involved.

I was hoping that somehow there was some bolt or something that could be tightened on the hinge that would increase overall resistance of the door movement. I took a look but didn't really see anything like that. the mechanism/hinge that controls that movement doesn't seem to have anything adjustable to it.

the tl doors have that point in the hinge mechanism where the door won't exactly slam unless you do it forcefully. Samething when you open it, it wont fly open fast. Just tell people dont slam the door. You'll never avoid it though cause it happens no matter what even you'll slam it once in a blue.

I also really like how Mercedes/BMW doors feel really heavy and require a bit more effort to open/close. When I had my X5, I felt alot safer especially in the event of a side impact collision. I think the doors are just heavier and I don't think the is anything we can really do to our TLs to make them feel the same way. Not saying I don't feel safe in my TL, I think its a very well built car and the doors definately feel heavier than most other cars.

Have you ever felt the doors on the Toyota Corolla/Yaris or Camry even? Or on Hyundai Accent/Elantra? It almost feels like you could open the door with your pinky...haha.

This is something that I always interest to do. But just like you, I wouldn't find a solution to it yet. Furthermore, I really like the heavy feeling on the trunk for MC/BMW as well. Do anyone know anything I can do tightening the trunk?

sound deadening definitely makes the door feel more sturdy and heavy like lexus and mercedes. also keeps sound out.

MB and BMW doors need more effort to close because they are in fact much more heavier and thickly constructed. They have more mass. The hinges are also much more heavy duty with more resistance, ever take a close look at them? You will see a big difference between them and a Japanese car for sure. They purposefully design the doors so when they close you hear a reassuring "thunk" it sounds like you are closing a vault.

I doubt very much you will get the same feel out of the TL's doors purely because it has less mass. If you add resistance to the hinges it will feel weird.....like they are getting stuck and as if they are not moving freely and smoothly. People will end up slamming your doors more often than less actually, lol. The TL has better feeling doors than the average Japanese car though, you should feel lucky

"like they are getting stuck and as if they are not moving freely and smoothly."

well, if you've ever opened a BMW/Mercedes door, that's EXACTLY how they feel. Until you get used to exerting more force to open them.

I agree the doors are heavier and built differently. but like I said, I just thought there might be a way to "emulate" the same "feel" by making some simple adjustments to the hinge.

Looks like the suggestion to install sound deadening material in the doors is the closest we'll get for now.

cheers.
