Do you bring your own parts/fluids to your mechanic?

Usually I've just let my mechanic supply the parts & labor.

But as my car is approaching major 100k services, I'm thinking I'll buy the parts myself and have them do the install.

For big parts (like the timing belt kit being sold for 295), it seems like a no brainer?

For smaller things (synthetic oil change), are most mechanics counting on profit from the fluids as part of their overall cost? Or would most just be happy supplying the labor?

For dealer oem parts, does the indy mechanic actually make a profit on the part (they usually charge msrp when you can find it online for cheaper)?

I find that bringing in fluids doesn't reduce the price. they still charge as if they were using there own.

the only parts I've ever brought to mechanic were brake pads and rotors. only charged labor of course. Cheap too..$40.

As they certainly do make a profit on the parts as well as a decent dollar amount on labor, most garages frown on customers bringing in their own parts, but depending on the relationship with said customer, it may be permitted, but make certain that they don't up the labor rate to compensate for the difference. They don't make a great deal on oil/filter changes so maybe they would charge you a minimal amount to do the job, maybe $10-$15.

depends. fluids not really. parts yes especially when i can get them cheaper than OEM for better aftermarket parts (ie brakes, tires). never had any objections. i think they know they'll just upsell the soccer mom on a bunch of stuff to make up the costs.

My mechanic always suggests I get my own parts. He has no issues with it.

I always supply my own parts and fluids. If your mechanic has a problem with that, take your car to a shop that doesn't.

I usually supply my own oil cuz my mechanic doesn't see much advantage in using synthetic and it's cheaper to buy my own. Labor to do the change is like $18 or something like that. I supplied the syncromesh MT fluid and he put it in for like $23. Same thing there. By the time I throw on gloves, crawl into and under my car, follow a DIY printout from AZ and struggle with figuring something out...with the hassle and time it's just not worth doing myself. I'll stick to the DIY mods and custom work that would be expensive to have a shop do.
