Do new Acura's use Synthetic Oils?

Hello everybody, I am new to Acurazine :

I just had a question.

I pretty much have a new Acura TL 06' and I am in the process of breaking in the engine.

I read on a website that Synthetic oil should not be used to break in the engine...

I was just curious if Acura puts synthetic oils into their new cars.

Thanks!

Not sure what your asking, but breaking in the engine is the first 600 miles? Why would you want to change your engine oil right now? Switch to synethic after your car reaches the oil change point, i.e. MID telling you to change your oil soon.

And welcome.

With the turbo the new RDX requires synthetic.

no its regular mobil 1 oil. On your first oil change its better to put the same stuff back into it or another 3000-4000 miles before you change it to synthetic.

Looks like synthetic is required:

This is right-off the Acura Service Bulletin for July 2006

Note that that SB refers to the '07 RDX needing Synthetic, not the '06 TL for which the OP on this thread started it.

For the 04, 05, 06 TL Acura recommends 5w-30, non synthetic oil. This is from the dealer. They dont know who makes 'Honda Oil', but it is not synthetic. I'm sure someone on this forum knows who makes 'Honda Oil'. By Contrast, my BMW uses synthetic oil, the bottle is labled 'BMW synthetic oil'.

Cannot use synthetic oil because it is too slippery and won't break in the engine properly.

That is one hell of an endorsment for Mobil1. I still prefer Royal Purple for the performance though.

To all those that don't realize it, the oil used from Acura and Honda in the TL is a semi -synthetic. It is not a pure synthetic, but it is a semi-synthetic. This is what Honda recomends be used and is great for the break in, but you can use Mobil1 or Royal Purple syn after the break in process.

5w20 is the recommended oil. Conventional oil, possibly with some synthetic. And no, while synthetic oil is NOT too slippery to break-in an engine (old myth BS), the factory fill should be left in for several thousand miles as it contains a higher level of anti-wear additives for increased wear protection up until the first scheduled oil change.

ExxonMobil is the supplier for Honda/Toyota branded lubricants, and Castrol is the supplier for the BMW branded ACEA A3/B3 rated synthetic oil.

Factory fill for Honda/Toyota is probably the supplier at the moment...

Then your dealer has neither read the owners manual nor looked at the oil filler cap. Those sources clearly recommend 5w-20 dino oil.

No, the techs use what Honda recommends, which may change over the course of a models life.

True, but we've yet to see a bulletin illustrating the need to switch to 5w30 in the TL. If such a bulletin exists, we haven't seen it in the Acura ServiceNews. Have him show you...(then also show us here)
