DIY - Starter Replacement
#41
Seems like the tray is slightly different for 08 6mt. I’ve had no luck trying to get to that bottom bolt yet. Gonna try jacking and trying from underneath. Hope it’s easier, but if anyone has some tips for this model, that’d be great!

update: I had access to the bolt that’s towards the driver by turning the wheel to the left and pulling the plastic cover down. This bolt was easier to work with, compared to the one on the otherwise, so when I put things back together, I left that one out. Car is starting again after it died on me at a parking lot. I had no signs of a bad starter, never had issues with that. Hammering trick didn’t work either. Hope this can help others as well. I took a risk by buying the starter, hoping that was it and it worked out. I read info online that the ignition switch could be a culprit too but I’m good now!

Why doesn't the diagram show the 17mm bolts?
Hey, AZ
Had to replace my starter so I thought I'd try throw together this DIY and pay some back to the forum for all the good info that's saved* me a good bit of money and helped me service and personalize my ride. *Albeit, less money than what the site has -ahem- *encouraged* me to spend!) So, humbly submitted, for your consideration, hopefully garage worthy, yadda-yadda...
First, here's pretty much all the service manual has on the procedure, but it covers the precautions and is a basic overview.
Hopefully the following will help fill in the details and get you past the untold obstacles. I bought my starter from NAPA, Bosch reman' for $190, 24 month warranty. $79 core charge on top of that, refunded upon return. If I were to do it over again, I would've had the starter rebuilt at a reputable place, as OEM does seem to be higher quality than probably any new or reman' replacement part. But, I was pinched for time and from searches here, NAPA is one of the better sources, so I don't think I compromised too much. FWIW...YMMV. Okay, so tools used as best as I kept track:
Good luck!

- 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 17mm sockets
- stubby ratchet (optional, but helps in tight places)
- standard ratchet
- extended ratchet or use a breaker bar or cheater bar
- short and long adjustable wrenches
Good luck!

What are the two items the yellow arrows are pointing at below?

I think those are the bolts that hold the starter in place. Did you mean you wanted to know the part number?

Here’s an example metric bolt specification: M8-1.0 x 20
This bolt specification breaks down like this:
If those are the correct 'bolts' for your model, it appears that perhaps a 17mm & 19mm may be needed?
M10=17mm spanner
M12=19mm spanner

This bolt specification breaks down like this:
- The letter ‘M’ indicates that this bolt uses a metric thread.
- The number ‘8’ refers to the nominal diameter of the bolt shaft in millimeters.
- The number 1.0 is the thread pitch of the bolt, which is the distance between threads, in millimeters.
- And the final figure, 20, is the length in millimeters.
If those are the correct 'bolts' for your model, it appears that perhaps a 17mm & 19mm may be needed?

It looks like #18 Bolt, Flange (12X45) - Acura (95701-12045-08)
& 20 Bolt, Flange (12X125) - Acura (95701-12125-07) may be 19mm?

Are you shrugging your shoulders? I cant tell what that means.. haha
Anyway.. I have a new starter.. I plan to install it tomorrow.. as soon as the temps are above freezing in OKLAHOMA. Arg. I knew I moved to Texas for a reason..
but thanks anyway..
this is my 3nd starter. The first one, the OEM starter, died at 68k miles. And now I have 119k miles. So that is about 51k miles on this 2nd starter, an O'Reilly's remanufactured starter.
now the 3rd starter is a New one from O'Reillys,

Allow me to clarify further for you:
A) My CL-S six speed utilizes the same
#18 Bolt, Flange (12X45) - Acura (95701-12045-08) &
#20 Bolt, Flange (12X125) - Acura (95701-12125-07)
to fasten the starter to the clutch case as your 2005 TL.
B) My starter and said two bolts are not accessible, from the top of the engine bay, because they are buried under a superchager & crammed in battery & box; otherwise, I would be able to physically confirm, for you, in my balmy 78 degree garage whether they are 17mm and / or 19mm.
Examples of what I mean:

This starter turns my engine faster than any starter I have ever had. My car started on the first hit and it spins the engine so fast that it starts quicker.
So far so good!
New $176 (not reman)
