DIY: 3G Change Front Turn Signal Bulb, switchbacks (Base and Type S)

I decided to replace my front turn signal bulb with switchbacks. This is fairly easy but I decided to make a DIY for this because I felt the instructions in the users manual was not very thorough, but that’s not news. I am only going to show the DRIVERS SIDE only because the passenger side is an exact rinse and repeat except the direction that you turn your wheels.

DIY: 3G Change Front Turn Signal Bulb (Base and Type S)

Disclaimer: By using these guides, you are removing me from any liability that is related to any injury that might occur or any damage to your vehicle. I suggest to always have a friend help out when doing self installs. If you question your abilities in completing any of these tasks, get a professional to complete the job.

Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes (Both sides)

Tools Needed: Screwdriver (Flat)

Here we go:

1. Since we are doing the DRIVERS SIDE, turn you wheels all the way RIGHT. This will give you the necessary clearance to the front part of the wheel shroud.

2. Locate these two wheel well shroud fasteners.

3. Use your flat head screwdriver to pop out the center portion of the fastener. After popping out the center take the fastener fully out and set it off to the side.

4. Next step is to get your finger behind the shroud so you can fold it back a little as shown in the next step. The easiest way to do this is to get your finger behind the shroud where my middle finger is in the picture. There will be a small opening to give you access behind the shroud.

5. Slide your finger, thumb, pinky toe, nipple…whatever you decided to use get behind the shroud with…up to slightly above where the upper fastener you removed was located. Pull it open and have a look before you start reaching in and grabbing.

6. Take a look at your headlight to have a general idea as to where the actual bulb is going to be. It is the outer-most bulb on the headlight assembly. Upon grabbing the bulb harness, you will be about elbow deep into your car.

7. Inside there is a support bar that you are going to reach over and get ahold of the light bulb harness. DO NOT try to unplug the bulb. Get a firm grip of the harness and give it a ¼ turn COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to unlock it and pull out the harness to expose the bulb.
8. From here you can blindly 1 handed (TYPE S ONLY)push down on your bulb and turn it counter clockwise to unlock and release the bulb from the harness then pull it out. (BASE MODEL) Pull out the bulb.
9. Put your new bulb in and enjoy…rinse and repeat on the other side. Just in case, I suggest testing the operation of your bulb before you put everything back together.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

- I used LED Switchbacks which also required me to follow this DIY to avoid hyperflash:
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/g-109-diy-eliminate-led-bulb-induced-hyper-flashing-without-load-resistors-815219/

- I used the same exact load resistor in the above DIY ( 1w .12 ohm) and I have LED blinkers in the back and LED switchbacks up front…NO PROBLEMS. I also did a good job soldering, shotty jobs cause problems. I also did this on my base model…no problems
- Luckily I bought my switchbacks locally from a new business owner who sells and distributes LED lights for home and automotive use. I paid $20 and was very pleased with the outcome. The white light looks great with the headlights on. I ordered from his under construction but operational website and picked up locally here:
http://www.fullylit.net/tempcart.html

Here is what they look like:

White

Amber

I didn’t take great pictures but it gives you an idea…pics just don’t do the lights justice. Maybe I’ll take some other photos that I actually spend time taking. Hope this helps to those of you looking to go switchback.
GL and HF.

It took me 10 minutes just to figure out how to get those bitch clips out. But once I figured out one side, the other side took a lot less time.

IM assuming this is the same process as the VLED triton switchbacks? besides adding that given resistor.

you got to mount the control boxes on the Tritons. it's very possible to do it with this method. I just prefer to take the bumper off because it gives you more room to work with.

trying to figure out what size o ring gaskets to use took me a few minutes and having the headlights out really helped me figure out the perfect size for a good seal

Did you have to take out the Amber diffuser? I've read it both ways so far.
