Didn't even try against an STI
I was driving on my way home from work last night. Some guy in a white car, which I didn't recognize, tails me then pulls up beside me to try to convince me to race him. I was thinking, "I'm gonna smoke this mofo," but I was way to tired from work to do any spirited driving, so I slow down. He cuts in front of me and I realize that he's driving an 07 Subaru STI.
Thank god I didn't go for it - from what I read, those suckers do 0-60 in the mid 4s?
I was actually thinking it was some idiot in a Hyundai Tiberon.

umm i think on a roll theres a chance..is ur type s manual??...should have given it a shot..lol i tried racing my frens legacy gt last night and i would stay with him until he hits boost...the turbo lag is bad then he'd juss pull away but then again he has like 360 to the wheels..but hey it was worth a shot...i mean i knew i would get destroyed juss did it for the hell of it..i got an 04 auto..gotta catch em when they not in boost and get far away as possible...lol

Don't sleep on the STi's or even the WRX's! They are balls out fast. With a few mods, muhummm. You might have been able to keep up with him, no chance in beating him, or staying side by side. I wish... I believe the new WRX's (non-STi) have the same turbo as the previous STi's...

the new STi has a more advanced turbo in the 07. VF39 in the 04-06 and a VF41 in the 07.
either way, you would have to have some sort of forced induction to hang with the STi.
According to my experience, you would have had a chance!
Check out the thread I wrote a while back.

I thought the same with my stock 04 TL 6mt until I ran into and EVO one night. From the few worthy cars I've ran with on the highway, the TL runs very well on top end. I find that if you are cruising from 65-80 and shift to 4th to build the rpm's up to 4k(close to VTEC) before flooring, the TL pulls pretty hard. In my car flooring it as soon as you down shift is like turbo lag with this "drive by wire" system. I have surprised many people though. I'm sure with the 07 Type-S should do much before.

Raced a legacy GT that a friend has....supercharged here....all I can say is those things make torque like there is NO tomorrow! 5AT here too. As I was brand new to the supercharger.....I didnt exactly launch it right...but when I hooked up I was hanging very well...but he ALWAYS took me from the dead stop until I got wound out a bit then I quickly started to catch him...but we never went an actual 1/4 mile. I would say in the qtr mile....I would take him definately....but it would take me most of it to get past him. I think he would top out at about 90-something in the 1/4 mile...to my 99-100+MPH depending on my launch. And the guy I was racing was a top notch driver....to my newbie status at the blown TL.
Just suffice it to say...those scoobies make good HP and awesome torque. Trust me! With minor mods....you are truely moving good!

A buddy of mine has a mod'd STi. Although the stock turbo's do pretty well, he put on a larger one (maybe a twin design?). Along with his other mods he puts down something like 400whp. At the crank he (of course) higher. Even the stock ones are SUPER fast off the line. My stock CLK55 was 4.9 and only would overtake about 80MPH on the stock STi (2003 model I think)

i had an 06 STi with full 3" catless exhaust, intake and a tune...there is no way roll/stop whatever my 07 TL-S would come close. but then again..i got rid of the STi for lack of comfort which this definitely makes up for

stock for stock, an STI will pull on an EVO on the top end. My best friend has an 06 STI, Intake, Exhaust, ReFlash & Dyno Tuned to about 302 AWHP and 325 AWTQ. I can keep up with him from a 5 MPH roll through about the top of 2nd maybe into 3rd if I get the shifts perfect. After that, goodbye STI. All I see are tail lights!
Even stock, that car pulled on my 05 6MT both before and after my AEM CAI.

Alright here is the deal, from what I can gather most of you are unsure about where the TL stands as far as straight line speed. I will draw from my experience with a 5AT '06 TL, and I will tell you what you should expect to beat and should expect to lose to.
The STI and EVO are clearly much faster vehicles than the TL. Even with the TLs higher displacement the TL can't keep up from a stop because of the gearing on the STI and EVO. The gear ratios are too close, which enables the EVO and STI to minimize turbo lag and stay in their powerband with greater ease. Not to mention all-wheel drive drivetrain allows them to have insane launches. Not to mention these cars are rated at low 13s 1/4mi. stock.
Even from a roll you still will be at a disadvantage, again because they have the closer gear ratios and an extra gear of the 5AT TL, even though all-wheel drive vehicles tend to slow down a bit at higher speeds.
A stock WRX on the other hand, is a completely different situation. The WRX has very close ratio gears, as a matter of fact, you need to shift into 3rd before hitting 60mph, which enables the WRX to stay in boost throughout 1-4th gears, which is why they hit 14.6sec 1/4mi. times with 35hp less than the TL. Because their gear ratios are so close down low that means at higher gears 4th and 5th they will be out of boost and will experience significant turbo lag. This is also why pretty much any car that can pull at least a 15.5sec 1/4mi. can keep up with a stock WRX and pull them from a roll.
Most naturally aspirated Integras should be no problem, unless they have a pretty comprehensive list of modifications, Intake Manifold, Cams, Valve train, bigger injectors, etc., but for the most part a Integra with exhaust shouldn't be a problem for the TL.
Stock SRT-4s, shouldn't be hard to keep up with either from a roll, you shouldn't expect a stock SRT-4 to pull you to hard from a roll because their gearing is somewhat like the WRX except they aren't all-wheel drive, so they don't lose power through the drivetrain, which makes them slightly faster. They will be difficult from a stop because they are lighter and they have the gearing to make them accelerate very quickly.
The TL has in my opinion has very poor gearing, from what I can gather 3rd gear is a 1:1 gear ratio, which is way to long, 3rd gearing going to 105mph is rediculous, and 4th gear is even worse, I have never been able to get out of 4th gear yet. The fastest I've ever gone with the TL is 120mph, and I don't see the need to go any faster, at that speed the TL will lose to any car, it feels like the car hit a wall, it barely moves.
If you want to race from a roll, my suggestion is to start in your strongest gear, which is 2nd. Start from a 50mph roll, and then hit 100mph, 110mph at most, yes it'll only take about 12seconds, but if you continue any faster you will just get beat the AT TL just won't go much faster. Now some people might ask why not start at 30, but I as I have noticed the TL doesn't down shift into first at any speed above 30, because there is almost no point so you might as well start the race in 2nd right about to where V-Tec hits, it's your best shot at winning.
My current win list:
180sx (Roll and could probably win from a stop)
A4 2.0T Quattro (Stop and Roll)
Integra (Roll and could probably win from a stop)
Good matches:
Stock SRT-4 from a roll
S2000 with exhaust
Golf GTI 1.8T downpipe and intake (Kept up with him until I hit 4th)
Haven't raced much, I'm sure I'll get more races, I haven't had this car for the summer yet. I've raced with the Audi A4 a few times, raced a WRX from a roll we hit 120mph and the A4 is slower than the TL, until high speeds 100+ only because of the TLs horrid gearing. A4 has less HP but 1 more gear and that's why with 60 less HP it still isn't much slower than the TL.
