Did I get got by getting GAP? + extended warranty?

Catch title huh?

Just purchased my first Acura! Certified pre-owned 2007 Acura TL Type-S Carbon Bronze Pearl with Ebony/Silver interior and 29K Miles.

Ended up going with dealer financing at 3.49% and added the optional $520.00 GAP insurance after putting $3K down.

Is the general consensus that GAP insurance is worth the $8.00 per month? I know the TL will hold it's value well, but I figure being upside down after an accident isn't something to gamble with.

What does everyone think?

Also - Maybe I'll start another thread, but I also got the extended warranty which puts the car covered by the factory up to 2014 or 100K miles both powertrain and bumper to bumper.

What say you?

I didn't get GAP insurance, so I can't say if its worth it or not. I did however get the warranty, but I purchased it from an online vendor from this site... I save a boatload going that route. How much did they hit u up for?

And oh yeah congrats and welcome... ur gonna get hooked on this site. Just look at me, I'm on vacation in Jamaica and I'm still sneaking on...

Gap insurance covers the difference between what the car is worth and what you owe on the car. It comes into play if the car is stolen or totalled (damaged to the point that repair would cost more than the car is worth) while the owner is still making payments.
How gap insurance works

Let's say you buy a new car for $20,000. You put $500 down and your payments are $350 per month. Six months after buying your car, it is involved in an accident and totalled.
Your collision insurance company determines that your six-month-old car is now worth only $16,500. They will pay you that amount (less your collision deductible if the accident is your fault). You've made six monthly payments plus your down payment, for a total of $2,600; you still owe $17,400 on the car. In a case like this, gap insurance would pay the $1,100 difference between what collision insurance covers ($16,500) and what you owe on the car ($17,400). If you did not have gap insurance, the extra $1,100 would come out of your pocket. (Note however, that if your insurance company determines that your deductible applies, that money will come out of your pocket -- gap insurance won't cover it.)
I purchased GAP insurance, looking back, I don't think it was necessary

With GAP insurance you will always think it was unnecessary if you don't ever use it.

Depends on what you financed the car for. Since you put such a big down payment on the car it probably was not necessary (GAP). Again depending on how much you financed for.

The extended warranty is good depending on which package and how much you paid. Please say you got the comprehensive? The other warranties are garbage.

It's $520 not the end of the world when you're spending so much on a car anyway. Just enjoy your new ride.

What I want to know is what you paid for your extended warranty and whether it was an Acuracare one or not?

Exactly. Everything is unnecessary until you need it. Besides, what 8 dollars in the grand scheme of things? One less McD's value meal that month. Your heart will thank you for it.

Thanks for the responses thus far. I pick up the car Saturday so time is killing me right now.

Sale price of the car was $25,795. Down Payment was $3K.

Ext warranty was purchased through the dealer and is an extension of the Acura certified pre-owned warranty. Car is now covered up to 2014 or 100K miles on bumper to bumper items. Car was already covered to 2014 or 100K on powertrain as it's pre-owned certified.

Dealer wanted $1200. I said no. Dealer offered $895 right before signing and I accepted.

Difference in my payment w/o GAP and Ext Warranty is $25 less.

It all depends on how much you paid for the vehicle vs. how much it would cost to replace the vehicle if it was totaled. If you got a GREAT deal on the car.. ie.. you paid 20,000 for a 30,000 car then it would probably be unnecessary since what you owe on the car will probably always be lower than what the car is worth. But if you paid close to what the car is worth or even more, then it's def. worth it since chances are if the car is totaled, you may owe more than the car is worth.

Congrats and welcome. I always get GAP insurance on all my vehicles. Depending on your lender, some include it in the financing. I've never had to use it but all it takes is one time. The peace of mind is worth the few bucks extra a month.

I always try to get GAP insurance, but never through the dealerships. I go through my financing company, and I believe it's around $250 for GAP through mine.

You should of got a pamphlet or something explaining which plan you got. There are like 4-5 plans. Starts with standard and goes to comprehensive. In the middle is power train and high tech. High Tech is the one most dealers will try to sell you on when you dont want to pay for a high $ warranty. It looks good in writing but really its a loophole policy. It should say on the warranty paper what you got. If it doesnt the way you tell is this: If it has a list of items that it says it includes (it almost seems like its a big list) then you got the high tech (or less). If the only thing on there it has is exclusions then you got the comprehensive. On the comp if it is not in the list of exclusions then it is covered. On the high tech and less if it says something is covered it may not be. Like I said they will loophole you somehow or come up with an explanation of why whatever part you need fixed is not covered. Comp>>high tech and less. Looking at what you got and how much you paid you probably got the comp, but I would make sure. Oh and if you still got time I would cancel the GAP or go back and tell them you'll give them $300 for the GAP, don't pay more than that.

I could have gotten GAP through Navy Federal at $329 but their loan was 3.99% - total savings w/ $520 GAP and Acura's 3.49% loan is $315 over the 5 years lol.

I called my car insurance provider (USAA) and they don't offer stand alone GAP. They only offer GAP on their loans ($299), but their interest rate is 4.79%.

Does anyone know of a reputable stand alone GAP insurance provider?

My understanding was that it wasn't a bunch of warranty options, it was the ability to extend the factory warranty that comes on new cars.

http://www.acura.com/WarrantyCoverage.aspx

So opting for the extended warranty allows the car to remain under factory powertrain and bumper to bumper warranty through 2014 or 100K miles (whichever comes first).

this is so true, i know from experience. i was second guessing the gap insurance when i bought my certified 09 maxima, i ended up getting it and like 7 months down the road i totalled it, since it was an expensive car i was way upside down so if i wouldn't had the gap i would have ended up paying a chunk of cash. so i will NEVER finance w/o gap EVER. it is definatley worth the 8 bucks u pay extra, i actually got mine for around 300 bucks cuz i financed thru my credit union.

well i guess u got a good deal b/c there is no better piece of mind than knowing if anything goes wrong with ur car you are covered, that was almost a deal breaker for me. i go into nissan and the sales guy tells me i am fully covered upto 100k miles and then when i go to sign the papers they offer me the bumper to bumper for another 47$ a month the sales man was gone home so i make the manager call him and tell the manager what a POS his liar salesman was and i am about to walk out and forget the deal, the manager makes the sales guy come back and offers me this bumper to bumper at half price. i get in his face for wasting my time and lying to me, and to make a long story short, i end up with the bumper to bumper at no extra cost it comes out of somebodies pocket and i get a full tank of gas on the new car and the one i was driving, a couple gift cards to chevron, best buy, and applebee's. so it was good that he lied to me i guess..lol... but it is a great feeling to have that warranty even if you pay for it. on my tl i couldnt get it since it was not certified and i am terrified to even hear a little knocking or anything. enjoy ur new ride

Picked up the car last Saturday and love it so far! Now I just need to wash the dirty thing, and find someone who will tint it correctly (see post).

https://acurazine.com/forums/mid-atlantic-311/we-cant-do-tint-shop-needed-near-waldorf-md-777062/

Thanks for all the advise. Gonna keep the GAP and warranty.

For me I think it was worth it. When I bought my car 2007 TL-S CBP with 76300 I bought the extended warranty. Car cost me 16,500 and I added the warranty for 1500 more 3yr/36000 miles.

In my case I did not even blink on getting the warranty. In your case, I'd probably would have gotten the extended warranty too.

The way I see it, the car will never tell you when something is going wrong and its great to know you will be covered when something happens to it. But this is just me. I buy warranties on almost everything. I just don't like dealing with the crap when something breaks.
