I put a $500 deposit down on my TL......my guess is that the individual dealer dictates the deposit and amount.....you as the customer can decide whether or not to put the money down.....walking to the next dealer is always an option.

Reluctantly yes. It’s a big no no in buying a new car. But the dealer told me to scratch if I didn’t. I even walked out on the deal because of it. They never said hey wait a minute. I had to go back with my tail between my legs (that left me in a bad position).

While shopping around for the TL last month, all the dealers I spoke with (about 4 total here in CA bay area) requested a $500 deposit. I guess different dealers can quote different prices. Maybe you can lie and say other dealers only requested a $500 deposit and maybe they'll honor that. Good luck.

I was asked to put a $500 deposit down at one dealership, but I passed and went to a different one. IMHO, there should really be no need to put one down. It's not like the car will sit on the lot forever if you decide against buying the car - it would probably be sold in a day or two (considering you had to wait for it, they probably don't stay on the lot too long). If you are ordering a 6MT/Navi, then I can kind of understand, but I would avoid it if at all possible.

I never have and never will put a deposit down for a car. Don't know why they would request it, other than making people think, "Well, even though they are assholes, I already put down a deposit and I'll let them step on me some more before I do something about it."

Yes. $300-$2k seem normal. It should be refundable if the whole process doesn't obey your contract/deal you two have signed.
