Dealer or The Local Mechanic?

Where would you take your car, dealer or local mechanic? To help you decide my 2005 acura TL tranny is slipping bad, so I'll be taking it to get repair but cant decide ...As scott would say taking it to the stealer (dealer) all they do is steal your money, taking it to the shop they rip you off!

trusted local mechanic.

how do you know that your tranny is slipping? have you tried changing the atf and the 3rd and 4th gear pressure sensor?

I would not trust the local guy to know the rebuild tricks- its an art form on the TL automatics
If he has done several TL trans, thats different- he already learned on someone elses ride.

acura has a few places that do all the rebuilds for them- a complete ready to install unit from them for their tech to drop in

Acura may help you with warranty- or `goodwill warranty' for over limit cars, if you suffer the same gen2 problems
Why gen3 didnt get a court ordered longer warranty is beyond comprehension
gen2 has 7year 9month/109kmiles on trans~

Is it slipping into 2nd and 3rd when on the gas hard?

I agree, I'm not sure I'd trust a local shop rebuilding one of these trannys if necessary. Even the techs at the Acura dealers don't rebuild them, they have a remanufactured unit shipped in for it to be installed.

slipping on 15 to 30 mph however random times rpm will shoot up or stutter 30 to 40. I was thinking the same thing, but only problem is the cost dealers charge. Don't get me wrong, wouldn't want some crap install into my car to save a couple bucks, i just want honest work done with a good quote.

i agree with some of the above. local mechanic for most things, but i would be hesitant in doing the same for the trans. i would do what you can and see if it helps, then i would probably take it to the dealer and see what up. best of luck!

Does your 05 have the external oil jet kit- meaning were you part of the recall to install that part on the trans?
If not sure call acura with VIN 1-800-382-2238x5 and ask if any open recalls, there were a few
If that was not done you may be in luck

assuming that was done:
how many miles is the next thing...acura goodwill- especially towards the 04 05 which carried gen2 trans problem with it- can be obtained
meaning they will go some to most or sometimes all of a replacement unit cost of 4000$!$
First they have to diagnose the failure thru test drive and code readings, then the Service MANAGER (dont talk to anyone else) calls the acura regional warranty rep and ask if they can help on the cost...based on low miles or customer/family history with dealer in buying cars or service at dealer in its past... or managers appreciation of your story/situation of student or young family man and tough economy

acura knows that local rebuilds by a transmission shop average $2500, they can afford to match that and not take a loss on the deal, just not making much profit
Biz is slow everywhere and some work is better than no work,
dealer gets 4 hours labor to swap trans~500$ from you and whatever acura will sell the trans for..500-2000 includes 3 year/36 warranty

Its worth a shot, at worst they charge you 100-125 dollars for inspection and say it needs selenoids (you can fix) or the clutch packs are shot (reason for goodwill)

PM me if you need specifics or more help, Im gen2 and have gotten coverage for others past those limits..its all in the asking and I used to work in the industry

call a few local and big name trans shops- ask what they charge for TL, TipTronic trans rebuild, how many have they done at that shop in the last 12 months, same guy still works there? Can they provide other TL customers as referances

Everyone has to use certain new parts where needed, some are mandatory others as needed
Its the actual labor thats killer and has to be done exact or the trans has to come back out of the car and back completly apart and start over,,when that happens its often 2- 3 tries before its done right

the old low bid to get the car in the shop~~~- take trans apart and discover that all these parts are toast and now its $3000 or more, maybe its crap and need replacement acura trans - but acura wont accept a trans thats been opened, and not one in several parts and pieces--
unless they find a problem that can be traced to acuras fault, what diagnosis were you given at each shop??

Average final price on gen2 rebuild has been 2200-2800 with 1 to 3 year warranties

what did they diagnose the failure from- clutch packs/disc? or other

what is your current miles on the car? less than 100kmiles?

did you ask each of those shops their actual experience level on a TL trans and that tech still works there today and all next week
thats more important than price, knowledge of the job

I'm really surprised that the 5AT is slipping on a 05 TL. Try to take it to Acura and have them replace it under "goodwill". I've heard of members on here who have gotten jobs like this done for 70% off the dealer price. Look into this.

Somebody on here give him the number for Acura corporate.

corp knows all about the problem- the first person who answers the phone is just a phone person not a corp rep!!
1-800-382-2238x5
04 05 has gen2s problems and goodwill is easier to get
FIRST the dealer has to diagnose
Follow the instuctions I posted and you will get results!

The Honda 5-speed auto is a pretty common unit for independent shops these days, but rebuilds cost nearly 3k.

No point in spending money having it rebuilt locally, though. At 86k, there's a good chance that Acura will goodwill most of the replacement cost.

Let's do it, son! Remember, don't push the tranny too much just yet. Make sure you break it in first!

glad you got your car back... my car is sitting at a dealership right now with a blown transmission, they arent working on it though. Driving back down to school yesterday it went out going up a hill passing someone, it had started to slip once or twice like two days ago and it seemed fine yesterday morning. This all seemed to happen fast, the car is an 2006 with like 70ish thousand miles.

why did they replace a spark plug and did they use the correct plug for the TL?
to match you other plugs~

Sometimes its a few days of taking your car to lunch on test drives before the tech can get it to duplicate your symptoms
0nce found they can work with warranty/Goodwill warranty
70kmiles is right on schedule for a failure~
