Dealer: Crows Feet & Wipers?

So the dealer has delayed my final delivery date, citing not having had their service dept fully staffed over the Holiday weekend.

Which is all when & good, and I'm actually on track for where I thought I'd realistically be to take delivery when the car first was schedule to transfer....but naturally the sales guy set a much earlier expectation, so now I'm feeling anxious that it is 'delayed'.

The 2 items that failed 'quality inspection' which they are addressing before delivery are things I'd never heard of???

I Google'd both topics, and located good information on 1 but nothing on the other alleged condition.

They're replacing the Front Windsheild & repainting the Hood.

When I pressed for WHY these were necessary I was told these reasons:

Re: Hood repainting: Crows Feet, which while wouldn't have been an issue initially could lead to peeling paint later on.

I hadn't heard the term 'crows feet' as it related to anything other than wrinkles near eyes! But sure enough that is just 1 common term for the condition:

http://www.paintforcars.com/blog/com...pening-part-2/

Re: Windshield replacement: That the Windshield wipers had 'rubbed into' the windshield ????

I couldn't believe this.

I was told well it was in a very hot environment in Texas.

But I have been to & had family in the real deserts of Nevada & Arizona, where the temps get much higher than the Austin area, which is far less brutal than say Houston, so I'm not sure what to make of this statement.

I also Google'd this topic to enlight myself as I had with the Crows Feet, term....but I haven't found anything.

Is this Dealer BS smoke & mirrors for something in your all's opinion or is this a real thing?

Rev

P.S. Since there is this slight delay, I mentioned what I'd researched about the Compliance bearings, and asked that they make sure they were in good condition up front since they'd have it a few extra days!

I was assured that they would have caught this as part of the normal inspection process, but that since I was asking specifically, they'd put it on the lift for me. So we'll see.

You have a NBP car?

Crows feet looks something like this

Usually from cars always being outside and in high heat conditions both outside and inside of engine bay. Props to dealer for actually taking care of the issue.

The rubber on the wiper blade(s) deteriorate/rips and the metal rubs againt the windshield causing rub marks, or even "old" hard rubber can cause marks/scrapes. Can't be buffed out without distortion, so replacement necessary.

It's a CarMax for the record, and it's not my first purchase with them.

I think CM is kind of a love them or hate them thing, but I've had good success with them to date.....

Justn is spot on about being a care issue. I've heard some say it is due to bad prep, but I disagree. Here is my car, and it had a clear bra on it at one time. You can easily tell where the bra was, and where it wasn't.

It's pretty bad. The worst part is I've read that it needs to be taken to bare metal for a repaint, but I don't necessarily agree, as that would make me think it is the 'bad prep' thought, and it clearly isn't. Having this car makes me want to learn paint and body work and do it myself.

Dont know where you've been all my life, screaminz!
lol, but you're a welcomed addition to the acurazine famiry!

fyi; my mother bought a brand new 2004 nissan frontier. I wasnt interested in cars at the time, and didnt take care of the paint. about 5 years later, we started seeing crows feet and by that time, the dealer wouldnt do anything for us, because well, we helped contribute to it.

Crows feet can also be caused by using products that contain chemicals like Xylene and some bug and tar removers. Not always just neglect. Also wet sanding the clear too thin ( which can happen as paint correction right at the factory or pre delivery ) .

A lot of guys remove the hood liner ... guess what ...

economy cars dont come with hood liners, and their paint is fine.

I would actually really like to know what the hood insulator does, my guess would be it keeps direct heat exposure from the engine off the hood to prevent crows feet. I've heard everything from my guess to its a fire suppresant to insulating the motor in the winter (which completly does NOT make sence )

Its there to dampen the engine noise as well as a fire suppressant, thats why its held on by plastic pins. I doubt its to keep heat off the paint, the sun gets it much hotter than your engine will/does. Fire starts, pins melt, mat falls and puts out fire.......sounds great on paper to the engineers, but not sure it works real well.....

my hood insulation has been off for 4 years now.
and I live in Houston, where temps regularly hit 98-100 degrees. I bet the hood gets hotter from the sun than the engine.

no crows feet.

Crows feet have has nothing to do with the clear coat. It's the actual paint that is splitting/cracking, not the clear. Some brand new Acuras and Hondas had this issue and they were only a month or two old and not even sold yet. My car went in for crows feet and it was no fault of mine. That's why the Acura dealer is taking care of it, because it is a quality control issue with Honda/Acura. On an older car that is several years old and I mean 5 years or older and not taken care of, the. Yea I would bet some crows feet would show up.

The material clipped under the hood is labeled as an "insulator". It's not meant to protect the paint, nor is it a flame retardant. It is solely there for "insulating" sound. There's a theory that it is also advantageous to emissions and MPG in the winter, helping retain the heat. Some lower end vehicles don't come with it.

My hood liner has been off since 2010. My CBP paint still looks immaculate.

so why would you take the hood liner off in the first place though - other than weight reduction??

^not for weight reduction.
for heat reduction!

although probably very minimal in reducing heat, it still acts as a blanket and traps heat inside.
heat is bad for performance.

The only time heat is trapped inside is when the car is standing still and then the fans draw air in circulating it.

Cool

OP when I bought my 05ABP a couple months ago the dealer painted my hood and front bumper as it was white as snow like "Screaminz28" from years of neglect and rock and salt chips. Now I treat the paint to maintain it until I sell it next year and get an 08. I'm leaning toward a lighter paint as I have owned a TL since 04 with a dark paint.

I agree with this, crows feet and rubbing the windshield are legit issues and the dealer is taking care of it, there is no need to complain.

I agree. I worked at an Acura/Mercedes dealerships body shop before moving to TX, where we warrantied many cars with this same issue. Our technicians had to sand through the clear and base, all the way to the factory sealer before getting rid of the crows feet. Its a factory defect from my experience.

Actually, I haven't even technically bought it yet!
I had it transferred from the Austin TX CarMax to my local CM, and they are doing all of this up front, without me having even signed on the dotted line!

I'm not complaining, I was asking what these conditions were since I personally had no experience with them.

If it *sounded* like a complaint, it is merely this:

I am starting to become anxious to take delivery, the delays are stretching out.

The most recent conversation with them yesterday evening indicated some additional delay.

They were to paint the hood on Tuesday, but as of 6pm Thursday had not.

They also revealed they will be painting both the front bumper and the hood now.

The other delay is the Front Windshield.
Apparently they could only source it from NY, and they had only just ordered it Thursday afternoon.

So...I mean I'm actually VERY happy these things are being addressed up front, and it has/had been offered to let me take delivery of the car and have these items written up as IOU's that I could bring the car back for when they are ready to do them, but .... I was more interested in having the car delivered with the work already performed.

I did want to understand why those repairs were necessary though, so that I could get a sense of whether there was some fundamental underlying reason I should walk away from the car all together.

So far I do not feel that is the case, and as I already said it's merely impatience / excitement / anxiousness to finally have my new baby that may have come across as 'complaining'.

Peace,
Rev
