Custom tint on the tails and side markers with Nite Shades
This process took a long time and a lot of patience. I bought a used set of side markers and tails on here. I bought a paint called Nite Shades from Summit racing. One can took care of the sides and rears. I really took my time, did all the prep work and sanded and sanded, painted, sanded, measured, painted. It took many coats and sanding to get them even and the color I was looking for.
I know most guys black out the tails untill you see nothing but black, but being 33 and on the road all the time, I didn't need to get pulled over every day by the cops. I think I will pass inspection at the right shop and a good amount of sunlight.
My car is a picture Whore so with that said here is a crap load of photos. I am not going to get into the whole process of how to get the paint like this or the clear coat and shine. Do a search on the wonderful WWW and you shall get your answers.
If you look, the lights are different tints at different angles. Enjoy guys and of course let me know what you think....

Looks REALLY good!!
Did you do the front side markers as well?
As always, I attribute the sucessful outocome of your mods to your supervisor/quality inspector. That guy is ALWAYS on the job.

Looks good
Hopefully you got some clearcoat on those, I read in other forums that it tends to go flat if you dont put clearcoat on em. And dont forget wax/polish just like your car paint!!

Thanks guys, yes lots of clear coat on those and sanded with 2000 grit wetsand and polished with compound and waxed to perfection. There is no way to get that shine without doing it that way. I have some orange peel in certain areas but you really have to look to see it.

I'll have to come see this in person since the pics are blocked. I've seen cars with a top-notch Nite Shades job done on them, and they look great. Knowing your level of detail, I'm sure these look good.

Is anyone interested in these on the black market if I did the same thing on my other set? Tails and rear side markers.....

I'm your same age so I feel ya. That is the PERFECT darkness for your car. It came out beautiful!!
I used nightshades years ago in high school. My main problem with the stuff is that it is runny and dull when it dries. That's why I used to use it lightly on the INSIDE of the lens and it would turn out like it came that way from the factory. I did that on my old Mercedes 190E and I wanted tail-lights that looked like the 2.3-16V EVO. It turned out just like them. The advantage with those housing is they can actually be unbolted apart, they are not adhered together. I never wanted to do it on the outside becuase of the dullness on drying. I guess your careful method of multiple light coats and sanding with some clear is what makes it come out so great.
As for me I have the next best thing on my car: Rockblockers.... But nightshades are better because you can get them at the perfect color you want. I wouldn't mind if mine were slightly lighter than they are.

On the TL I went the film route because I didn't want to deal with removing the bumper.

Yeah I hear ya on the lights being too dark. I am not 18 anymore but I figured, this will be a mod that if done right, can be something different than any other light out there. I am happy with the color and turn out. If you look at the lights from about 20-30 feet away they look dark. The closer you get, the lighter they get. It something that can't be seen with the camera.
I never thought about painting the inside of the light being that the lens is red. Good idea, just more work on these lights. Sand, paint, paint, sand, paint, match, sand, clear, and sand. It was a pain in the ass but it turned out good.
Thanks for the comments!
