Exclamation Custom Steering wheel ** NEED HELP **

All,

Looking to doing something big to the interior of my Type-S, If you haven't seen my progress Thread I'm changing my interior to Ebony/Silver. I'm looking to go for a leather steering wheel pattern like on the NSX concept as seen bellow.

The portion that is red on the NSX would be black on mine, while the black leather on the nsx would be gray matching the middle of the seat. The stitching would be gray like on the seats as well.

Obviously by looking at the wheel, I won't be able to make it flat bottomed without fully making my own custom steering wheel so that's a bummer. Bu the biggest thing to me is getting that carbon fiber top on mine. I have contacted 2 places, Dallas Custom Steering Wheel and Redlinegoods. Don told me he doesn't do them and didn't seem to thrilled about my challange. Haven't heard back from Redlinegoods.

Does anyone know a shop that would be interested in tackling a job like this. Let me recap here on everything i'm trying to accomplish

-Increase steering wheel thickness
-Carbon Fiber cap at the top of the wheel
- the leather pattern as seen on the nsx wheel
-stitching pattern as seen on the nsx wheel

While I'm doing this I am going to try and make new paddle shifters, the current ones are small, squeak, and feel like crap. Would love to find a company that could custom make a carbon fiber or aluminum one.

If anyone has any ideas, knows a guy, or anything please let me know.

^maybe try to find the type-s carbon fiber steering wheel, and then Send it to Dallas Custom steering wheels, to have color/stitching/thickness changed? I don't think they can do flat bottom or not (prob not), but it would be closer to what your looking for.

Here's another guy that can potentially do the work. I haven't used him myself, but he's been vouched for elsewhere on AZ and he responded to my email very quickly. http://leathersteeringwheelwraps.com

If budget isnt an issue I'd send it to Dallas custom. I think they will do pretty much whatever you want, and they do outstanding work.

http://www.redlinegoods.com/ Redline quoted me $130 to do my wheel, but they are in Europe so shipping times would be long. They did do my armrest cover and e brake boot and did a great job with excellent leather. If you did all three they would give you a discount.

I think it would be easier to use the 09+ tsx/tl steering wheel to start with, than the 04-08 TL steering wheel. it looks more similar so a lot less custom work would be required. I dont think it'd be too much work to retrofit the 09+ tsx/tl steering wheel either, but I could be wrong

Can Andrew at wwwTheDoubleAA.com. Tell him that I sent you and see what he can do for you. He made this wheel for my Corvette.

OP, what you want can be done...just at a cost. I contacted these guys several months ago to get a quote for a carbon fiber topped wheel, re-wrapped with thicker padding, and a flat bottom. If I recall, quote was $900...they look awesome tho.

Corey, the important thing is that you need to use an OEM wheel. Otherwise, you'll run into a lot of problems. My C7 wheel is an OEM wheel.

I haven't had my wheel done yet cuz I would have to remove it and ship it to them to be done...here is a picture of my armrest and ebrake boot. Sorry, picture isn't great. I am still considering it, if I can find a used 08 wheel to send them.

I'm still waiting on a reply from them. It's been a few days now.

I will defiantly contact them. That wheel looks flipping amazing.

I plan on using an OEM wheel. I like the pattern you used on your wheel, if I cannot get the carbon fiber done this is likely the route I'll go. I don't want it to be too thick though because the type-s wheel is already big in diameter.

I did some Gimping to edit the wheel. Such an annoying and complicated program to use. So here it is, 4 hours worth of editing work to see how it'll look.

My buddy has a flat bottom steering wheel on his Mr2 and he said it gets annoying when turning, have you put thought into that?

Yeah that will be the next project, once my dash cracks I'm going to try and have it leather wrapped. Won't be easy to do it through, especially with getting everything to fit back into place.

Thanks! And at long last someone is finally up for the challenge who can do all the leather work and carbon work AND make it flat bottom!! They are practicing on a wheel right now for the pattern I'm after!

Yes I have looked into it a little bit. I am not getting a huge flat bottom. Just slight as I heard the same thing that it gets annoying.

Yes ATLS-they use a "core" wheel and modify it. It's much thicker than the OEM wheel too, which is a good thing! I don't know what they do or how they do it, but it's sweet! I figure they strip the OEM wheel, cut it at the bottom. Replace that with a flat piece, then re-wrap it. And then hand stitch the final leather around it.

its supposed to give extra knee room to make it easier to get in and out, especially in race cars where you have a roll cage its hard enough getting in one, so the flat bottom just gives you a bit more room

Initail costs are looking anywhere from $1000 - $1800. I'm excited for this!

What made you hate it? I am not going to a big flat bottom, just a small lump at the bottom, purely for looks. I've always liked how they looked.

That's probably my favorite part!

Yes, I did this in photoshop to see how it might look on my car. To say it isn't gonna happen isn't very smart. It might not happen within 2 weeks as I don't want to drain the bank but expect this to be done early summer.

This was taken with my crappy digital camera but the wheel is actually a dark black unlike how these pics show.

the wheel was expensive but was worth every penny!!! it feels so good driving with it and adds a great touch to the interior. the red is very sharp but doesn't stick out, and blends in perfect with the type s theme. i HIGHLY recommend this mod to anyone that is thinking about it, you will not regret it.

Wheel details:

company: dallassteeringwheel.com (they did a few other members on here as well...Don is a stand up guy and does GREAT work, and fast)
price: about $400 (expensive but you feel it everyday...)
details: perforated sides, nappa leather top and bottom, red baseball stitch, 1/8" padding

Thanks! I found a used one on eBay for 60 I think and just switched my electronics over. Don at Dallas steering wheel is really quick on turnaround, I think it was within the same work week for him getting it, rewrapping, and sending it back, he's a good guy!

It's all good! I enjoy seeing yours! That looks really nice! I'm still waiting on exactly how much this is going to cost me, we will see.

If it really ends up being over $1000 then I'm going to give up on the flat bottom portion. The carbon is a must for this project.
