Converting an automatic transmission to a manual transmission?
i bought my acura TL-S (2008) around the same month it was released. the dealers around here (new jersey) told me that if i wanted a manual transmission, i would have to wait atleast 2 months. i needed the car as soon as possible so i was compelled to buying it automatic. i would much rather have a manual transmission. i thought about changing the transmission from auto to manual, but i dont want any mechanical problems from this. anyone have experience with something similar to this? all advice is appreciated.

You'll save money doing the trade in, the parts for the M/T are pretty expensive, and it'll take you a lot of time. Also add the fact that there will be no warranty for the transmission and it's components (clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, etc.)

If you had an old gen2, like a 2000- it would cost you 8-10 grand for the different motor and trans- computers and all- wiring harness change etc.
Gen3- I dont even want to guess! It wont bolt onto your engine I bet~
The choice is BUY what you wanted in the first place
Or: use SS mode as a gearshift without needing a clutch- the ultimate full synchro transmission, or stomp the foot rest like it was the clutch if that makes you feel better.

yea dude.. what your thinking about is a big NONO.... jus go trade it in and lose the money....
u will lose just as much money as getting a swap and to top that u wont get a warranty... so go trade it in asap!

That's the wackiest idea I've heard. Should have waited for the 6MT or bought it from another dealer...the swap would ruin a new car and take longer than waiting, not even considering the cost

What did you pay for it and how much you owe?
I tried trading my o7 TL-s in with 4000 miles and was getting raped even by acura. I paid 33,700 before tax and title and tags and the best offer I got was 29,500 for trade in.
You could try selling it personally but you would only be able to get 1000 to 1500 more then the dealer would offer on the trade and thats not worth the hassle of selling personally. You might get a little better offer cause your is AT and AT's have better resale.
So what your looking at is at the most getting 30k for the trade in and then do the math from there. How much negative equity + new car + tax + dealer ass rapping.
I would wait until you have more miles on your car, cause the trade in value is not going to go down much when you have 10k miles vs 4k miles and then you would be carrying over less negative equity or try and find a used MT, GOOD LUCK LOL, might have to go out of state for that the MT are so rare and people that buy MT do so for a reason and love their f*cking cars. Maybe a dealer with a used MT Type-S would give you a good deal for your AT knowing the will have an easier time getting rid of an AT.
Your basically screwed

too many hobbies...
You are definitely in a tough position here. I like evanj's suggestion a lot. Try to swap with a used 6MT. From what I have read on this forum, the 07 and 08 Type S are exactly the same, so it doesn't completely matter which one you get (although it would kind of sukk to get an older model year). Do a region or nationwide search on cars.com (that's how I found my 6MT). If you put "manual" in the search criteria, you will narrow down the hundreds of TL's for sale to about 20-30 (nationwide). Make sure you check the interior photos to MAKE SURE it is a 6MT. A lot of those dikkhead dealers listing the cars write "automanual" to indicate it has the auto-shift capability (damn, that was annoying when searching for a 6MT).
If you can find the color you like with acceptable mileage and within your travelling distance, try to come up with what you are willing to pay in difference. If you find an 07, I would think you should be out of pocket less than $2K, possibly under $1K. Too bad you couldn't wait when first buying, but hey, hindsight is 20/20. Either way, it's sunk cost now. Don't worry about it and try to fix the problem as cheaply as possible.
I know how you feel - I don't think I would want an auto TL for very long either. I travelled to Chicago (from VA ~800 mi) to get my used 07 KBP 6MT in Dec 07! About 24 hours of my time well spent to get the EXACT car I wanted.
Good luck.

What if your transmission was shot and needed to be replaced, how much would it cost to have them put in a manual instead of an auto replacement in there, compared to just putting in another auto?

this is why one should wait for the car they want..........

, did a 1969 Mustang Mach I for my nephew IIRC in 1985.
Converted a 351 Windsor with an automatic to a 351 Cleavland with a 4 speed top loader & LSD.
Would never try it on a brand new car due to the end product not being worth cost.

It would cost the dealer quite a bit, you would need:
Clutch Assembly
New ECU
New Guages
New wire harnesses for motor
New transmission - acura covered
interior trim
Shift cables
and some other stuff, maybe subframe...
Basically it will cost you maybe 4-6K easily for the other stuff...

Three Wheelin'
I really don't understand this topic LOL. I mean a TL is a TL to me and to have such a nice vehicle as the Type-S, come on, is it really *that bad* driving an AT vs. the manual you say you really want? There are pros and cons to either tranny, and I think the modern AT transmissions (ESPECIALLY on a TL-S) are close to a manual and would shift when I would anyway, etc. You have the car you have so just deal with it and when you are sitting in traffic, enjoy the convenience of the auto and be thankful for it. When you feel like shifting for yourself, put it in Manual mode. IMO it's a pretty darn good compromise over getting really screwed over on a trade-in.

Ahhh to be young again... I remember when I was 19 and full of such crazy thoughts...
Well.. I still have crazy thoughts, but most involve Swedish flight attendants.... but I digress...
Keep the AT... It's actually pretty damn good. Save your money and get some sweet mods, you'll be a lot happier.
