Cleared Headlights Illegal?
Cleared Headlights Illegal?
Does anybody know if clearing the headlights (removing the amber plastic/diffuser) is illegal in CA?
Also, if I change my front side markers to shine white LED (instead of the stock amber), is this illegal in CA?
Thanks

Not Cali specific, but a "general rule of thumb".
Either white or amber sidemarkers should be fine. Not red (in the front) and not blue.
Most (all??) states require cars to have reflectors. Amber reflectors in the front; red in the rear. The only reflector on the TL in the front is in the headlight. It's *probably* required.
Now, that said, I don't know of anyone who has had trouble with blacked or cleared headlights. I just got an annual safety and emmisions inspection and passed no problem. My amber reflector is completely removed.

dmv website has complete details
turn signals may be yellow or white in front,
There are special bulbs that light forward and to the side giving decent illumination
most are just on the tip
Should be same for front side marker, its intent is to show which direction the vehicle is pointed when viewed from the side- white/amber in front and red in back..its an old boating and flying thing of what color means what in front of you...is it crossing your path or moving clear of you???
rear can be red or yellow turn, but side view needs to have a red to indicate rear of car (mostly for when you're parked and reflective surface helps other cars see yours)
reflective tape would work too- made in colors that match the car so invisable by day and light up big time when headlights hit it--similar to whats on semi trailers with the white/red stripes
Its all about framing an image of the vehicle for others to avoid~
You are more likely to get pulled over for tinted windows on the driver/front doors
Thats not allowed and they are cracking down on it for Officer safety...they need to see if someone is pointing a weapon at them--

Depends on the state. When I cleared mine, I checked local laws.. Oregon and Washington only require a front reflector on commercial vehicles and vehicles over a certain length... I also found Oregon can have front signals blink white or amber, but washington requires them to blink amber. (Both states required a red rear reflector tho)
Here are some California Statutes I dug up from California's Vehicle Code.
Reflectors on Front and Sides
24608. (a) Motortrucks, trailers, semitrailers, and buses 80 or more inches in width manufactured on or after January 1, 1968, shall be equipped with an amber reflector on each side at the front and a red reflector on each side at the rear. Any vehicle may be so equipped.

Reflectors on Rear
24607. Every vehicle subject to registration under this code shall at all times be equipped with red reflectors mounted on the rear as follows:

That's the point. In california, front/side reflectors are only required for trucks, buses etc. California Vehicle Code Division 12, applies to all vehicles, not just trucks. It's just that section 24608 explicitely says that only trucks, semi-trailers, etc, are required to have front/side reflectors, but any vehicle may be equipped with them.

I used to see people get pulled over for having white signals in Dallas but that kinda stopped when Volvo as I recall started putting pretty much white bulbs in there turn signals. But so far a few of my buddies have cleared TL headlights and they seem to be trouble free. But if you are worried just throw an amber bulb in there and you should have no issues.
