make sure you turn it atleast 3 clicks or you'll get the message

I believe it tells you this inside the gas cover.

It just needs to be tight. One click will do it normally. Three clicks helps insure that it is tight. The message might last a few days. The car just needs to make sure the system is sealed.

It also says that after tightening, turning the ignition switch off and on and then driving over 30 mph for at least 45 seconds it should go off, but it may take 2 or 3 drives to get the message to turn off.

It also says if the cap is not the cause, the message will turn off and the MIL light will come on and to see your dealer ASAP.

I got that and it turned out a rat chewed thru my knock sensor. If it doesn't go off in a little while, you'll have to take it for diagnostics.

The same message appeared for me a few months ago. I was very low on gas when the light came on. After I refilled my tank with gas, I made sure the cap was on tightly. The next day after a couple of engine start-stop cycles, the message went away and hasn't come back since.

This just happened to me a week ago. I was on the hwy about 70mph, and the fuel was low and the check fuel cap message came on. I got home and checked the cap, re-tighted the cap, re-fueled the car and it still stayed on.
I took it to the dealer the next day. I dont know what they did but it didnt come back on.
