cars you considered other than a TL

For my '04 manual, in no particular order;
o Cadillac CTS-V
o Z06 Corvette
o Jaguar
o Ford Focus
The CTS-V was having some rear end issues at the time. The Jaguar I was looking at didn't have as much power as I wanted. The Z06, well what can I say.. I love that machine. But I put it off in favor of something more widely useful to me at the time. And the Focus was really nice but short on power primarily.
When I wrote about this in the summer of 2004, the bigots on this forum came out of their holes and got real pissy - the thought I would even consider a Ford in the same breath with a TL. Like I said, they were ignorant bigots.

Drifting
I had roughly the same exact requirement list for the most part. It really did come down between the Legacy and the TL for me. What sealed the deal for me was driving them back to back the TL was just no much nicer.

Pro
Mazdaspeed 3-quick, fun, somewhat inexpensive, and takes well to mods(turbo 4banger)
E36 M3-cheap to buy, but def. expect problems, especially with the dinan SC one I was looking at, old, for the most part you can't find one with fewer than 80k on the odo

08 Audi A4 - outdated interior and hated the Navi sys
08 s60 - options I wanted were not on the lot
08 G37s - neighbor bought same weekend as I got the TL (not near as many goodies as my TL-S
Believe it or not but the TL-S was the last on my list that I intended to see and drive but ended up being the first dealership I hit up. After I was done at Acura everything had to measure up but didn't to that of my type S.

just kidding, i couldn't help myself.
p.s. I like the new Taurus SHO, though interior styiling isn't 100% my thing.
as far as the CTS, a co-worker of mine has one, and I didn't find the seats comfy for some reason, that semy circle at the top of the seat didn't feel comfortable.. he had the reg CTS not the V.

My 02 Altima recently was in need of a new engine, and I just couldn't justify the cost of that considering it was almost the kbb value of the car to have that done. So my criteria for a replacement was as follows:
1) luxury/semi-luxury
2) manual transmission
3) low miles (relative to age of car)
4) under $20K
5) certified pre-owned
The cars I was looking at:
1) G35 (coupe or sedan)
2) 3 series (coupe or sedan)
3) A4
4) Acura TL
After about a month of searching, I couldn't find anything that matched my criteria. Well, I found a few A4s and the ONE TL I have now. Considering the A4s were no-option cars, it was a no-brainer going with the TL (05, Navi, 6MT, 33K miles, CPO, $19K - almost $4K under kbb too!). I really wanted RWD or AWD, but the TL handles pretty well. Definitely happy with my purchase.

I was shopping for a car near the end of 2006 (October) and test drove the following cars in no particular order prior to getting my 06 TL:
1. BMW 335 sedan
2. Infiniti G35S and G35x (the new 2007 models)
3. Lexus IS250 AWD and IS350
I was 90% sure I was going to get the Infiniti G35s but people were going into the dealers and paying MSRP for them. When I went to the unveiling of the car at a local Infiniti dealership, sales ppl were saying customers were paying MSRP for it (and I believed them but I couldn't tell if it was a sales tactic since I never bought a car before).
A loaded G35s was going to take me back $57K. I then decided to bump down to a G35x since I live in Toronto and could use the AWD feature for winters which bumped it down to I think $55K. Then I decided to cut out the navigation option which bumped it down to about $53K or so.
I really disliked the design of their audio system where the subs were in the front door panels. I am a person who likes to set my Fader to -3 and have more of the volume come out of the rear speakers and the Infiniti audio system was cripped if you set the sound to the rear speakers.
I really wanted the Lexus IS350 but at an MSRP of $70K it was too expensive. I chose the loaded one because the Mark Levinson system was only available in the most expensive package and sound quality matters to me.
I was close to pulling the trigger.
The 335 was such a fun car to drive but I disliked the plain interior. The car would have costed me $65 - 70K too. I never really gave BMW any thought because I know their cars are expensive.
I then went to Acura to test drive the 06 TL. I thought it was OK. Acura was never on my radar. The options were Navi or No-Navi and the price was in the $40K range.
After a few nights thinking things through, I came to my senses and realized that Acura was the way to go since it made financial sense.
During the first year I second guessed my decision alot.
The TL has many competitors in its segment and many of those competing cars are great.
After a while, I just accepted things and decided not to think about it any more.
My only regret is that I didn't negotiate pricing for any of the other cars. I just looked at the MSRP so I don't know how much I could have bargained off but anyways, last month I made the final payment on my car.
If I had gotten any of the other cars, my payments may still be going on for atleast half a year or longer and my montly payments would have been more (I paid $1000 a month for the 3 yr finance).
At this age, I have different goals now and want to allocate my finances to other things so I'm glad I got the Acura in the end from a financial perspective.
Plus I'm happy with the car too...... =)

1) '03 BMW 5-series (test drove an 04 and looked at the next Gen 5-series)
2) '04+ BMW 525i/530i (hated the fact that I had to have a maintenance warranty to include a factory warranty)
3) 06+ IS350 (too small, very sporty)
4) 06+ M35 (gas mileage sucked)
5) 04+ TL (after test driving over 10 TLs I test drove 1 TL-S and my mind was MADE!!!)
I LOVE MY TL-S!!!!

Three Wheelin'
E39 M5, Older accord (92-93) and swap the k series in there, Dodge 2500 Quad cab. Found a few E39s but I factored in ownership costs and it was not feasible for now.
