car insurance issues
i dont know about the rest of you, but i'm always amazed when i get car or motorcycle insurance quotes.
i'm a single guy, 32 years old, never married, no kids. i am a homeowner near dulles airport. i average around one speeding ticket every seven years, and only ever had one insurance claim (the left front tire of my 97 accord came off on route 83 a year and a half ago- for a total of around $1300).
since my accord is paid off, i pay around $300 a year for coverage (not comprehensive). one of my motorcycles (cbr1100xx) costs me $1300 a year (i'm making payments on it, so i need full coverage). this TL is going to kill me with coverage here in virginia. or florida. or ny for that matter. my work and living situation is such that i could *honestly* register a car in any of the 3 states.
geico (whom i have my motorcycle and accord with) was wanting to charge me $1150 for 6 months of coverage. i don't live in a bad neighborhood. i don't plan on driving the car each day. and i consider myself a safe driver.
i hunted around for different insurance quotes, and the lowest i came up with was $804 with progressive. progressive and i have a little history (long story) and i was hesitant, but for the same coverage, what could hurt.
two weeks into the policy (i picked my car up a month ago today), i get a notice that my policy has increased and if i want to continue coverage, i need to come up with another $150.
wtf.
maybe i'm a tightass when it comes down to it, but i am having a harder time justifying $954 for 6 months (and only after practically promising to not drive the damn thing) than i did in spending 34K on a car when a 25K accord could have done damn near the same thing.
anyway, suggestions?
i'm not a veteran, have excellent credit, am a homeowner, and don't have a leadfoot.

well, you could get married and pop out some kids. That really brought mine down. Of course, you would then have a whole 'nother set of problems and bills! But I digress.
Insurance sucks. It isn't fair, and they nail you for things that personally I think should be illegal on the grounds of discrimination. For example, you can be the exact same person, move to a different area, and get nailed with a higher bill. It's BS, but for some reason the insurance industry can get away with it, whereas industries like mortgage lending can't (think about the outcry that would ensue if banks charged double interest in a predominatly minority area than a white area...)
I noticed the TL is quite a bit more than my old lexus GS. Maybe the TL is more "sport"? It's still BS as I am the same driver.
Don't know what to tell you other than keep shopping around.

Who is your home-owners insurance through? I had State Farm for mine and got a multiple policy discount for having homeowners + auto. Seems you should be eligible for quite a discount if you had homeowners + 3 vehicles. I paid $500 every six mos. for my TL before I sold my house and it went up to $700 afterwards. (although some of this was due to a longer commute.) You might also try playing around with your deductibles. A higher deductible can lower your payments, I think.

My insurance on my TL is $402 every 6 months. But I live outside of Austin so this tends to help out just a tad. Not to mention that I'm also married.
Sounds like progressive snuck one from behind with the extra charges! That shit happens to me all of the time. I wouldn't worry about the extra charges unless you simply can't afford it. Just think about how much folks in Detroit or New York City are paying compared to your $954.
Before I moved from Houston to Austin last year, I used my grandmother's address in the small town of Brenham so that I would save a bit of money on my insurance. I was first paying out over 1000 bucks every six months but when I changed my address, the rate went down to about $650 give or take. So if you have parents that live in a small town you might give this trick a try....

Full coverage on the TL and my Solara, and liability and comprehensive on the Corolla. Total around $3,200/yr with Allstate.
I'm 37, single, and a homeowner on Long Island, NY. I also have homeowners and umbrella coverage with Allstate.
On the other hand, I looked into buying a used Celica convertible in the late '90s when I was living in Brooklyn. That would have cost me around $6,500/yr!
My Dart is on a classic car insurance policy for $175/yr.

I am from Massachusetts, one of the worst insurance states in the country, because it is regulated. Mine is only about $840, and I live right outside boston. I'm not sure if it is the same in other states, but my policy is renewed on a yearly basis, and they cannot change the price in that year time period (if your driving status has not changed). So, it seems odd to me that they can raise the price if you havent been in an accident or ticket, w/e. I'd change insurance immediately, sounds like you have a choice in insurance carriers. We are stuck with about 6, regulated by the state.
Mine is $80 a month with $1000 collision deductible and $500 comprehensive. I'm 29, single, and homeowner in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I have State Farm. I would warn you about collision deductibles.... They tend to charge through the nose for a low deductible, and they will punish you with incredible premium increases if you file a claim under a grand anyway.
$698 for 6 months in VA with progressive which is by far the cheapest around. I checked with almost every other company out there and nobody is cheaper. I have like 3 not at fault accidents 1 ticket for improper equipment (exhaust ticket) with an old car and that's about it.
Progressive is a substandard insurer...DO NOT use them!!! This will hurt you in the future if you try to go to another insurance company.
I'm guessing your or your parents aren't military...if so, use USAA. If you have a 7 year clean driving record, call Erie...no one cheaper than Erie; great service, too. Amica is great on service, rates are starting to go up, though...you can get a refund on your HO each year, though...current refund is 25%. Check through work, you might get a discount somewhere...I get an extra discount at Nationwide through my company...made their rates untouchable by anyone (even Amica with their HO refund). State Farm's not bad, but pricey. GEICO is a rip off...won't even quote you HO if you have a claim, regardless of circumstances or type...and their auto rates are a joke.

Geez, thats high! I pay about $629 every six month for two cars. ('98 Escort (no comp) and '05 TL (full coverage). I could have gotten it even cheaper if I went with minimum coverage on the TL.
I have $500 deductibles for both collision and Comprehensive
and my limits are $50000/$100000/$300000
I have AMEX assurance for my car and also my home owners and they are the cheapest I have seen.
I just did a few qoutes and geico wanted $772 for 6 months, Progressive qouted me $615 so its even cheaper than what I have now. I may even switch over to progressive for my home owners and auto if they offer multipolicy discounts. But since I have been with AMEX for 5+ years I may hold off for a while.
I live about 30 miles outside of Philly. I used to have Prudential, but my agent told me to go with this company called Shelby since they were cheaper. I'm 36, single and own my home. I pay $550 every 6 months for full coverage. I get a discount for the house being on the same policy.
174.00 a month with a 100.00 deductable, full coverage through state farm.
I'm 29 and part of a multi-car policy.
Stae farm might be more expensive, but I don't see suprising rate hikes, and the CS I get is fantastic.

AXXKicker,
Try raising your deductibles. I mean whats the point of having a $100 deductible. For most people who can own a car like the TL $100 is nothing so why not raise it to like $250 or $500, that can save you some money. And if you don't have the cash then build a cash reserve to pay your deductible or other things. People who make good income and have nice cars that have low deductibles on insurance are just throwing away money.

AXXkicker--
I see you have GEICO. Do they issue you homeowner's coverage? (I've never heard of them being a homeowner's carrier, but I don't know.) If not, you might explore whether some other carrier will issue you both auto and homeowner's policies. I live in Kingstowne (east of Springfield Mall) and I have homeowner's, auto, and umbrella coverage through State Farm. I get a multiple lines discount for having both homeowner's and auto, and a multiple vehicles discount for having two cars, and one or two other discounts that I don't want to jinx by talking about them.
Until last week the six-month premium for the TL for me was $518 ($1036 per year). It dropped last week because I added the second car (an RX-7) to the policy. I forget what the new amount is. I could get a lower premium by carrying lower limits of liability, but I raised all the limits a few years back because of the number of expensive cars on the road around here. Also I have a $250 deductible on the collision coverage for both cars and no deductible on the comprehensive.
BTW, I am a 32-year-old single white male.

AXX,
Try Erie Insurance in Ashburn Village. I've always found Erie to be very competitive in rates.
703-723-6600....ask for Kelly.
