Which car is faster

The 3.2 270 HP Ac TL or the 3.0 255HP BMW 530?

Just curious.

The TL has 270hp & 238 ft. lbs. of torque and the 530i has 255hp & 220 ft. lbs. of torque. As for raw engine power the TL has it. The Auto TL is 3570 lbs. and the Auto 530i is 3494. They are pretty close there, but the lighter the car the better.

I've never driven a 530i, but if I had to put money down on which was faster, I'd say the TL is. The 530i is more of a luxury car, so it probably geared that way. The TL is more performance than luxury. Why not go out and test drive both!

A lot of times BMWs gereate their torque at a lower RPMs. That's one place where the TL is lacking.

With the AT and from a stop, I think the 5 series would get the jump. From a roll, I believe the TL would win.

I've raced my brother 2 times from a stop and both times I beat his 530 with ease. Its pretty close off the start but in 3rd gear I leave hime like he's standing still. Racing up to about 120mph I had 3-4 car lengths on him......

One thing I wanted to add, the 530i is not to fast but it handles like a dream.

He's talking about the new 530 with the 255 horsepower, not the current with 225hp. TL is faster. The new 3 series will do about 5.7 0-60 and weighs a good 400 lbs lighter. The TL will do about 5.7 0-60 (in A-spec, better tires). The 530 will be lucky to hit 6.2.

I put my money on the BMW.

The new 3.0 255HP is pretty powerful.

The 3 series can do 0-60 time in 5.6 seconds. Or even less.

I apologize for the inaccuracies in my previous post. I just got off the phone with my bro and he has the 525 with M sports package not the 530.

Since the new 3 & 5 have the same engine but the 5 weighs more I assume the 3 is a bit quicker?. But what would be the logic in that? That would be like the TSX being faster than the TL.

Do you mean faster or quicker? Generally, faster means top speed, and quicker means acceleration. I believe the TL is both faster and quicker than the 530. I think BMW uses soft riding tires on the 530, as it is not a performance positioned 5-series product, and they limit the top speed electronically.

Disreguard what I said about the same engine in the 3 & 5, the 3 has 225 hp & the 5 has 255.

But I mean quicker. TL or 530i? & why is the 5 so much more expensive?

The New 2005 BMW 530i only has 225hp not 255hp!! BMW states 0-60 at 7-7.2 secs. So the TL will kick the 530's ass no doubt about it. Maybe the TSX can have some fun with the 530i.

One more thing is the 545i will be very close with our TL. The 545i has 325hp and BMW states 0-60 at 6-6.1 secs which is very close with our TL.

Not bad for our car to compete with the 545i in speed.

I saw this deal on craigslist. 1990 535i fully loaded, nothing wrong, just tuned up, 140 k miles for 3500. yes only 2 zeroes. When i turn 17 i want to get something along the lines of that for myself. Beamers are my fav. Good to know the TL can beat the 530. Will it take a 330?

I believe the 545 has done mid 5s in either R&T or C&D. BMW always underrates their cars. The TL doesn't stand a snowballs chance against the 545 given equal drivers (straight line). BMW makes really great v8s.

The BMW 530i is more expensive than BMW 330i is because the 530i is bigger, more luxurous even though it has the same engine. Smaller and lighter means quicker, but less roomy.

I agree here I would not tangle too much with a 545. They put out about 40% more torque than the TL over all and does it at 3600 rpms... not 5000...

All depends on the gearing of the car I would imagine...

You neglected to include the most critical details. Do both cars have manual tranny's? If you have a manual and he has an auto, then there is the difference. Otherwise, it sounds like they are the same in accel

Luxury? Take a GOOD look at the plastic center console and then re-phrase your opinions please. They took the POS interior out of the 3-series and dropped it into the new 5-series. Looks VERY cheap.

The 545 is an EIGHT cylinder PLUS it's about TWICE as expensive as the TL ($60K)
