Cabin Air filter replacement

So I stopped in to the local dealer for an oil change on my 05 TL 2 weeks ago and they suggested I might need the cabin filter changed. They were willing to provide this service for the incredible price of 310 dollars.

My wife used to have an 08 Civic. I had gotten one of those super cheap can't pass up oil deal coupons from the dealership, so I took the car there for the oil change. Just before it was done they came in and told me that the cabin air filter needed to be changed. Knowing that I had just done it, I asked how much they charged for the replacement? He told me $84. I asked him how he felt about charging $84 for a $10 part that takes all of about 90 seconds to change? He didn't answer me and walked away. They must have put a note in my service history because they don't come to me and do that anymore.

Unfortunately there are a TON of people that take their cars to dealerships and get suckered into buying additional services they don't need when they are there for something as simple as an oil change. I hear it all the time. The service advisor will come out and say, "well Mr so and so, we're about done with your oil change, but during our 39 point inspection we found that you need a cabin filter, an air filter, a transmission fluid change, a throttle body service, two new tires, a new headlight bulb, the left hand side of the car is falling off, oh, and by the way, you also need new brakes...all the way around. Total charges for all that will be way more than you make in a month." I laugh when I hear a lot of people say, "go ahead, just do it." Either because they don't know any better and trust the stealership, or because they don't care enough. That's why I make myself learn about how these cars work and how to fix them so that I don't get hosed if I have to go there.

They don't call 'em stealerships fa nuttin, but sometimes those recommendations are warranted since many don't keep up with proper maintenance.

Takes me about 20 minutes to change my cabin filter. I recommend the ATP HA5 from rockauto, charcoal infused to limit odors.

Yes, certainly changing the cabin filter is a necessity but as a DIY, On my first with one, I was surprised how dirty they get. On our cars, changing the filter is easy. My previous car required removing 18 screws to remove the glove box!

i honestly would of been insulted if they threw that price at me...
i went to my local acura dealer 2 years ago because my seatbelt and srs light would come on and not go away even with the belt buckled.. since most seat belt parts are lifetime warranty i took it in and told them the problem.. they told me they can replace the buckle since the sensor broke but to fix the srs light they would have to replace the unit inside the driver's chair HOWEVER they dont replace the unit itself, i would need to replace the entire seat with the unit inside, costing a total of around $1500 or somewhere close to it, i told them not to touch anything in my car if they are gonna charge me and told them that if they replaced my buckle, the light would go away because the two problems are linked... the lady there said it wasnt linked and if i want the repair done, to come back for it... so i got a brand new buckle for the drivers side and both the srs light and seat belt light have never turned on since lol.. just goes to show A LOT of dealerships have people saying shit they dont even know is true or not.. they are a business and they are in it for the money period

unless you have a fire under your engine bay i wouldnt trust a stealership when they come back to you with their clipboard full of shit that they say needs to be fixed
