I'm facing some what a dilemma LOL. I recently test drove a 2013-2014 Charger SRT8 fully loaded. Before anyone says anything. I know the Type-S and SRT8 are two different animals! There are pros and cons to each vehicle. I want to be sure of my decision before I purchase either vehicle. What made everyone stay with a Type-S or base TL in general? What cars were your alternatives before buying?

For me, simple answer, a manual transmission; 'nuff said.
Are you able to afford the cost of tires, fuel and insurance?
if yes, get the faster car.
If no, or not willing to pay for cost of owning a v8 then stick with the TL
Indeed I agree on the manual! I currently have a 6spd 93 Acura Legend Coupe. Wanting to retire it from daily duties. So I basically need a daily driver that's fun! With power. Reliable. Manual is a must!

There is a definite price difference. TL Type-S 11k
SRT8 mid 30k. I can afford the maintenance. My main concern would be the reliability of the Charger
If you're looking long term, reliability will probably be better on the TL despite being a lot older. Difference in cost alone will negate any needed maintenance.
if short term, get the SRT for a deal. Have a ball with v8 power and gobs of torque then sell it once you're over it .

Speaking strictly for myself, if an SRT8 Charger could be had with three pedals under the dash, I would seriously consider one. The missing pedal means it will be missing from my short list of new cars.

What reliability concerns?
It's a rock solid platform.
Again, comes down to...are you willing to pay to play? Yes or no.
Side note; the TL-S is old. Reliability might be of concern, as simply because it's old and used
I'm thinking if I wanted a car with an automatic transmission, the Charger would be my choice, if I wanted a car with three pedals under the dash, the TL would be (and is) my choice.

I LOVE the used market right now!
Plenty of choices for an enthusiast, whether that be high powered automatics or high powered 6MT's
I'm just not ready for the high powered expenses...tires, fuel, insurance and the whole shebang.
saw a recently repaired '09 AMG C63 for $17k. (recently repaired meaning the factory heads were beefed up, there are instances where the factory headbolts get sheared off)
I would rock the hell outta that...even if it is only automatic.. but shieet, i'm not ready for the rear tread to be always missing
My brother owns a new hellcat charger, it is amazing to drive, big, comfortable, and fast. If I had the money I would buy the charger. I own a type s 6mt and absolutely love it. Only downfall about a Charger is that everyone owns one just like a Mustang. The type s is old and will need maintenance a lot sooner and outdated electronics. Lots to think about

Funny thing about those advanced electronics; my wife's Mazda has them and I've rented more than a few Chargers when I've been on the road, all in all, I much prefer the outdated electronics in my TL; no need to fiddle with a button or wheel or joystick ti figure out what radio station I'm on or where the next turn is on my trip.
Fitting the budget for a reliable yet still fun car I would go with the TL. You know the automatic, non turbo one. Just like any car, I would want to mod it and starting at mid 30's that could get into the $40's fast. At $11-$15K you can get a clean TL-S 6MT and still have $20-$25k to blow on hookers and cocaine.

I agree that sometimes they make it too difficult for simple things like the radio as you stated, I was kinda talking about everything that involves electronics in a car. 3g's are just getting up there in age but they are great cars and their body lines never seem to age.

Ahhh, you were referring to body electronics. Personally I don't see that as an issue. Looking at my Accord as an example, I bought it in August of 2012 and drove it more or less daily through May of 2017, yes, it had the odd wheel sensor and the well known seat belt sensor which needed to be replaced (all very inexpensive), but beyond that, the electrics were solid. Errr, then I parked the poor thing in favor of my new (to me) TL, the Accord sat in the "out back" area of the farm I live on until August when I lent it to my brother. Hmmm, suddenly the tailights and many of the interior lights were not working; tearing into it, we discovered a trove of acorns and such, a family if chipmunks made the Accord their home and they apparently had a taste for Honda wiring.
Personally, I wouldn't shy away from a 10+ year old car if it was never wrecked.

This is true about everyone has one (Charger). I'm financially ready for the maintenance. Outdated electronics have never bothered me (1993 Acura Legend owner).

Definitely saving a lot money by going with the TL! Money left over for maintenance and other cosmetic goodies!
Style is subjective, I personally think all the chargers/dodges look ugly, big and clunky. They’re good for going in a straight line.
still everyday I look at my 05 tl and think damn that’s a hot car! In my opinion their is no better looking car than these 3g (well unless I had a lot of $$). I may be in the minority here but I haven’t had any problems with my auto with almost 200k miles and I ream on this thing. Go with your gut, I got my car and made it fast and will continue to make it faster because that’s what’s fun to me. I also don’t like looking like every other car out there, To each his own.
Forget the 10 year old car and buy the SRT. Fuel mileage is close17/26 vs 15/25 and overall more bang for the buck along with an 8 speed trans.
Let's see, depending on article, 0-60 and 1/4 mile 4.2/12.5 to the old '08 5.5/14.3. No contest.
Some suggest not purchasing a car with an A/T trans, but in my experience the manuals also comes with problems, syncros, clutch assemblies, etc, and depending on the manufacturer the A/T is faster.

Hey, Yoggi...my two cents:
If affordability isn't an issue, get the one that turns you on the most. It's that simple, IMHO.
I have a budget. I looked at Mercedes, Infinity, Lexus, Honda (and even MDX)--so you can see I have different criteria--before I decided on the '08 TL Base I picked up last week.
When I sit behind the wheel, the 3G fits me right--like my favorite blue jeans--and when I get out and look at her, she still looks sexy for an old girl and I know she'll run forever if I treat her right.
See?...Simple.
