Brakes? What Brakes?

Brakes? What Brakes?
I have the 04 6MT. Problem occured this morning, temp was about 39 F and the road was misted over from rain, car was not trully warmed up yet. I made a left out of my development which is an uphill sweeper maby 45 degrees over a 1/4 mile. My p-zero Nero's spun a little and traction control kicked in as usuall then a 1/4 mile later I was coming up on a light at the apex of the hill hit the brakes and nothing happened. I felt a slight pulse like traction control was going off but no slide the car just wouldnt stop. Luckily there was a grass run off which I took to avoid the car in front of me. I was only going about 35 MPh so it wasnt a big deal once I hit the grass. I drove another 5 miles to my train and the brakes were fine but you can imagine the sick feeling of hitting the brakes and nothing happens.

I can definately relate, i wasn't in a tl, but i know the feeling. mine actually resulted in an accident though, apperantly the brakes just failed w/ out warning ('94 ford taurus) really freakin' scary. As far as ur TL goes i have no idea what could cause something like that.

right off, all I can think of would be air in the lines. Have you had new pads installed recently? Have you checked your brake fluid level? Have you upset any women lately?? Hmm?
Ok, last one was a joke...

Was it cold enough for the roads to ice over? Was the pulsing from the antilock brakes? M + S tires are not that great on ice. I have seen this happen many time and have experienced it myself, but I knew my antilocks were working and the car just did not have enough traction to stop...

One would think if sliding was the cause the ABS would have been making quite the ruckus. But then again I have yet to experience the ABS process in my TL.

Besides whats already been mentioned, under some temps
and humidiity, its possable for things to ice up, carb icing
of the old days.
I think the TL uses a vacuum brake boost like most cars do, and its
possible that the vacuum port iced up somehow.
When you have cold moist air expanding through on orfice, the temp drops
below 32F and the moisture can form ice and plug things up.
You can also have moisture in the crankcase vent system which ties into
the engine vacuum someplace, and short trips can build up a LOT
of moisture in the system.
This gets real bad in cool moist situations and you can have a LOT
of moisture in things.
If that happened, you would loose the brake boost, but the brakes
should still work, but the pedal effort would be very high.
I think you have the brake pedal connected to the master cylinder
directly, with vacuum boost, the master cylinder has two seperate circuits,
front and rear, and its a direct hydrolic path to each caliper piston,
through the ABS system.
I would think it would be very unlikely for everything to fail at once as
long as there was fluid in the system.
Moisture builds up in brake fluid, but it takes years on a normal system,
and usualy shows up as a problem when the brakes are hot and getting used a lot, the moisture boils and causes problems then.

Without ABS or ABS not functioning, the brake still works, it just mean that one can not steer while braking.

I just posted a thread that may possibly be helpful to you. Check it out here is the link https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...43#post1315943

what i noticed with abs is that its not guaranteed to make you able to steer. i had 215/65/15 on my last car and i had to push brake only half way in order to steer on snow. otherwise car just plowed through snow. it was very cheap generic tire so that didn't help either
