Brake Caliper Paint - G2? Advice....

I am thinking that painting the hubs and edge of the rotors should be silver (to keep it OEM looking) and paint the calibers black. The crafts store confirms that the Acura decal installation will not with stand the heat and there are no OEM decals to order. I even called the custom shop and automotive paint stores. Is G2 the best brand to use ($36/can). They tell me three coats is the best. COULD USE SOME INPUT.

I love the new car even more than I expected. However, I did notice that Acura left out the back door courtesy lights. I believe even the '59 Biscayne Chevy had that....those nasty cost counters. I know....pay the extra 15k and you get the light in the RL.

Please inform me if the G2 High Temp caliper paint holds up and does not fade or dull? One paint shop told me that I need to have them powder coated
Is the Tire Rack as inexpensive as one can get it, delivered?

I have used G2 with fine results on the S2000 on the track - I have no experience with VHT, other than on headers, where it was so-so. G2 is brushed on with several coats, likely epoxy-based. VHT may work, but I wonder if it has the high temp capability of G2's system, or the resistance to scratching/crazing, etc. One has to wonder if similar results are availble in a spray can, then why would anyone pay much mroe for the brushed on products? And wouldn't a spray require removal of the calipers? I did my car without having to do so with the brush system G2 uses.

The stock brakes are di-chromate, with kind of a gold/silver look. So i guess silver is closest. I went with red on the S2000, which went nice with the dark silver exterior, and the black and red interior.

If you are just going to do black, consider BBQ (hi-temp) black from Home Depot or similar paint source. I have used BBQ black on rusting brake drums for years with good results. I painted the rear calipers on my 6MT TL BBQ black to better match the Brembo fronts. The paint is $3-4 and goes on with a foam brush.

i did something similar, i used engine enamel from discount auto parts. its supposedly good till 1200 degree or something.... i bought it and cleaned the calipers and brusjed it on the back calipers to match the front, i did this 1 month after getting it and it looks as good today as the day i did it... if not a bit dirty

OK I'll bring this thread back from the dead, and hopefully not get flamed in the process.

I am interested in the Rotora BBK but wish the calipers came in black. Has anyone else been bold enough to paint them? If so any problems? Was there any sanding involved?

Thanks

Nice, i think the most interesting thing would be to base the caliper white, then get the decals to spell out Acura, but them ontop of the white, then paint the whole thing black. When you remove the decals after painting it all black the acura white letters will appear like the stock fronts.

hey i'm glad to see this thread, i was wondering how much trouble it would be to paint the 6MT black calipers to gold like 350z w/red brembo decal. What is the hottest on average 6MT brakes get? I'm really hoping this can be done w/o too much trouble...

Hot enough to deserve the Duplicolor caliper paint- thats hi heat resistant for sure
Or engine paint will work
If your brakes are over 600 degrees you have bigger problem than paint peel!

Oh I like that idea. http://www.jvdgraphics.com/prod-cs%20Acura.htm

Would this do?

Also do you think it's oK to paint over the ROtora paint?

I would imagine because not everyone wants screaming red calipers. I personally think the black is classy, and I assume Acura thinks the same way.

One thing about the G2 paint is that you have a very finite amount of time to get everything painted. Make sure you don't so it on a really hot day when the paint will dry too quickly. I was really not able to get the two full coats on the fronts because the paint in the container had begun to dry and it got too thick and wasn't spreading very well.

PlastiKote caliper paint ..

My VW went through 3 winters with just a minor respray of the top coat after the 3rd winter and we have salt and chemicals.

I cleaned them up with a wire brush/wheel and shot them with BrakeKleen and masked off the areas I didn't want to squirt and applied a thin layer and dried with a heat gun/Hair dryer then added 2 more layers .. time was about 45 min per wheel total. Cost $12.

nice pics! With the 6MT black calipers, what would be the best way to remove that paint off? I wonder who has done this yet... about how much would it cost for powdercoating F&R?

Just a quick crazy idea i thought of, probably not possible... but would the front calipers fit on opposite sides? move left to right side, and right side to left, so that acura logo faces inwards. Tomorrow, i'll take a look at them to see if it can be modified.. Just thought of this.. i like thinking outside the box, ergo 'Thoughts Uncommon' crazy huh?

here's a pic of what i'm saying...

Duplicolor caliper paint is 10 bucks and has spray cleaner, paint in a can and a brush
all you need is a wire wheel on a drill to scuff the surface of bare calipers or painted ones.
Several THIN coats- 3 is good- is better than any amount of thick coats
20 minutes tack time to recoat with duplicolor

o nevermind that krazy thought of mine.. lol i was hoping ppl forgot it and left it alone, i decided to keep them as they are and paint the back calipers black... repainting would probably be too much of a headache(long term) for me to do.... i would only do it if i found a place willing to powdercoat them

I think I know what you mean. Kinda like on european cars where the calipers are both on the right side of the caliper when looking at the car from the side, right?

So i'm at my job and i bumped into a customer who had an sl500 looking very nice. It had some huge staggered HRE's and i also noticed he painted his calipers red. i asked him what kind of paint it was, he said it was some type of epoxy paint that he brushed on. he said its the same type of paint used on jets, and it was made in germany. told me it cost only $50, and he has done this himself to about 6 of his cars. The SL had the paint on for like 8 months, and it looked like he just did them! I thought it was powdercoated, very good quality... He told me he even had put some on a jeep he uses for off roading, never had any problems -no scratches, nothing... i asked him what the brand name was, he told me it was Autotrim or something, he kinda wasn't sure or forgot... i asked him of G2 paint, he said don't bother, that stuff is garbage... just thought i'd share this!! srry if i typed messed up, i'm in a rush later!!

Wierd...
My G2 painted calipers are 18 months painted and look like the day I did them. Sure the SL guy may have more money, and may even have a superior product (whatever that product may be)... but I wouldn't call the G2 paint garbage with my experience...

i have used G2 on quite a few cars with fantastic results through new england winters. i have used the silver and red and they both look like powdercoat when applied properly. the better the prep the better it looks when finished. i am going to be doing my car soon i just havent decided what color to do if i paint the Brembos.

i just did this a few days ago for my first gen TL... upgraded to dual piston from the Legend Coupe...

i put a layer of clear and left it to really dry... will prob do one more coat of clear and be done with it... i use High Heat Engine Paint good up to 1200 degrees... so i think it should hold...
