TL > 528, period.
540 is a different story, it would be a close race.

If we're talking about brand new 528i / TL, I would say the TL is faster in a straight line.

Yea, like princelybug said, any TL will smoke 528i easily.
But I think there are other aspects that are important to others too, such as the name, BMW.
Handling-wise, the TL, especially the Type S, is incredible in this segment as shown by lap times and words from the drift king, Keiichi Tsuchiya.

Also, BMW is really the ultimate driving machine .. but FWD isn't completely out of the question.
As you know, impressive article.

TL / TL's chassis really makes up for it being FWD.

I love the E60 A LOT....but not enough to get a 528 over the TL. I would get any of the others (535i, 545i, 550i and M5 of course) over a TL but then again all of the others are priced well beyond the TL-S.
From my POV the question is: would I get a used 545i or new TL-S? And that is a difficult question to answer.

As posted in the thread on the E60 forum...it's really just a status symbol to drive a BMW. I'm a car enthusiast and I could care less if someone came up to me and said I drive a BMW. Who cares?! Now if you said, I drive an M5 with this list of mods, then I would say lets's go check it out. IMO, I would never pay that much for a car, when I can get similar amenties and more power from a car that is $10k less. The TL-S is just as nice, has one of the best Nav systems available, is versatile (its luxury and sport with no addtional "packages") and has more power with less drive train loss (+1 FWD) than some of the 5 Series. Torque Steer (+1 RWD) is a bitch, but handling is pretty damn good and if you need traction in snow, FWD is the way to go. Of course you can get the option for AWD but again, it's another option. The only options on Acuras are Nav or not Nav and some different wheel selections.
So, my opinion, I would get the Acura....as for the faster than a 528 comments, those are coming because of the section you posted in. Racing and competetion is just more of a performance section than it is a value section.
Just my

They are comparing a $50K car to a sub $40K car.
And one of them was comparing the 545, lol cmon.
Yeah the rear of the TL is slighlty smaller than a 5 but you're talking about and inch here and there. I've been in the 525, it actually feels smaller to me.
Handling wise, I think the TL will take the any 5 series, even the M5

I hope you guys are joking since with the exception of the 528i, any 535, 550i would smoke the standard TL in the straight line and twisty. (I used to own a 2004 TL with A-SPEC). The new TL-S might be a closer contest.
Regarding the M5 (e60), it will eat all the cars list above for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We're taking about 507 HP V10 with 0-60 in low 4s. Of course, the M5 costs twice as much as a TL-S.
It's hard to beat Honda/Acura's reliability and value but if we're talking about performance, Infinity G35/37/M35/M45 is a better match.

whoever said that the M5 will be outhandled by the TL, u are on something.... U MUST BE CRAZY. Althought i own a TL, my dream car would def. be the e60 m5... Hopefully i will be able to afford it soon. the 528i is nice, but i wouldn't take anything lower than a 535i. You might as well save up for the 535i and chip it. If you are in a hurry to purchase a car, i'd say buy the TL. just my opinion.

I owned two bmw's in a past life and think they are great driving cars...but when it comes to reliability they can't touch Acura. On a side note I think the e60's are ugly with the exception of the m5. The 3g TL is a much better looking car and better value. But, I would take a 335 coupe over my TL any day of the week.

Hmm. you are not looking for performance..
I think the 5 series has a lot of features too, just that you need to pay extra for them. This can be a good thing if you want to customize your car, the TL, or most Acuras, dont give you that option, besides a navi (or tech packages etc). But then that's also a strength of the TL, it comes fully loaded at an attractive price.
The dimensions suggest that the 5 series is a bigger car, but I believe the TL is a bit wider.

Even older 7-series feel pretty nimble for what they are. Still, those new 5-series and 7-series are ugly as shit, the facelifted versions being only slight improvements, though even more in the case of the 7.

The slalom speed for the TL-S is in the 66 mph range....the slalom speed for the M5 is just a hair shy of 69 mph. That is a fairly sizable difference.

Well, I said they're ignorant in the sense that they have more to learn about Acura than saying "PS. Ever notice how the Acura logo is a bent Honda sign. HA!".

It is even 4mph faster than the IS350 due to the difference in engine size.

That said, I have driven the IS250 and IS350 (both AT) and both handle impressively for a Lexus...though short of the E60 and E90 IMHO.

Can the VDIM on the new IS350 (ie 2008 models) be turned off? I heard that you can do that now, but not too sure if that's true or not.
My friend bought a IS250 6MT (probably the only one in Vancouver, considering only 1000 of them were sold in the States!) recently, and I'm hoping I can test it out next month when exams are over.

A slalom course usually has several (may be 10?) cones lined up in a straight line with a given distance between each cone. The speed at which the car travels through the course is the slalom speed. I'm not sure about this but, I'd imagine the speed is the average speed?

I have been closely monitoring the BMW 530i, the Mercedes Benz E320 and the Lexus ES330 head to head with the Acura TL I bought. I must say, the closest car in terms of performance and handling, was the BMW 530i. The BMW and Acura TL were in the same price range.
The E320 was 2 thousand dollars more and the Lexus ES330 was several thousand cheaper though it is completely an old man's car. I have test driven about 3-4 cars of all the ones mentioned and clearly, the BMW had a much better presence on the road. It had a better grip as well and yes you feel really proud when you drive a BMW.
But come on, the acura tl is clearly the winner in terms of performance, reliability, safety standards and all other aspects except handling which the BMW 530i deserves a go. Now, I am not talking about the 2008 BMW 530i which has its power specs closer to the TL Type S.
I thought for 2 weeks whether the BMW or the Acura, the badge did not matter to me. What did was the warranty, the reliability and most important, the performance.
P.S. I am talking about the 2004-2005 model ranges of the Mercedes Benz, Acura, BMW & Lexus since I was hunting for a used car.

In any case, E39 > E60. Straight Russian mobster car.
