Blue Instrument Lighting

Just read an interesting tidbit in Road & Track: That blue instrument lighting is more easily perceived by older drivers and red by younger ones. No wonder the TL's lighting appealed to me, and I didn't like the lighting on the BMW, G35, or Pontiacs.

I find that when the sun is shining directly through my rear windshield or through the sunroof when it's open, the blue and the red of the dash seems to stand out in a way that I can still see my speed/rpms through the glare.. it's really hard to explain, but it's rather nice.

I cannot stand the red used on the Audi, BMW, etc, interiors. I think it's harsh on the eyes, and I'm probably categorized amongst the young'uns.

Audi uses red (which looks nice), BMW and Infiniti use Amber () and Merc uses a cool pastel blue, looks pretty sweet... I like the Blue Red combo on the TL though

I Love Blue Lights!!!

I love the blue! Blue rocks.............especially the way the 2 lights from the ceiling shine down and reflect on the aluminum trim. Sweet and soothing at the same time!

Nice!!!

I actually prefer the all blue setup. That's what Honda and Acura had back in the laste 80s and early 90s. You got white, red, blue, the off-white on the stereo, and even glow-in-the-dark green on the window buttons. I wish Acura would make up its mind. I would love to see all blue, except on the guages where the needles would be red and the numbers would be white. Everything else on the dash should be blue, as should the window buttons.

I heard that car makers are starting to give consumers the choice of color. Anyone else hear this?

The new Mustang allows you to change the color of the guage lights, I haven't seen it for myself, but you can adjust it based on what you want it to be.

Can you change it at will or do you have to choose when you buy the car?

Actually it's the exact opposite. It's been scientifically proven that red on black is the easiest on the eyes, and blue on black, is the harshest, actually promoting fatigue and headaches. That's why all the guages in airplanes are required to be red.

Agreed, it had been proven that Red and Green are best for night vision with wide spectrum incandescent lighting. I'm not sure it makes any difference but how about night vision with the narrow spectrum LED lighting as we have ?

Personally I like red or green. But this blue is striking day or night but seems a bit ricey. And also the balance is off. The instruments are too bright and the control surfaces too dim.

I thought blue was good for keeping nightvision, not effecting your eyes dilation as much as some other colors. Included with that was Red. I have one of those army surplus flashlights and it has a blue and red filter. I know the red less effects your eyes to see low level light, has something to do with the rod cells.

I personally think our set up is hot ! For some reason bmw , infiniti and audi guage color are just down right boring ! I like what Mercedes is doing but other than them I think we have the hottest ones out there .
*its funny when others mod their cars and their guages they always change them blue ( from what I've seen ) I like /enjoy the brightness because my tint is illegal and it still allows you to see through

The windows that is . . . . the guages/ navi provide enough light and brightness(IMO) that make the 20% tint seem lighter !

i personally like the red/amber over the blue/white combo...but they both look nice.
i can't stand the blue/red combo in VW cars. Their guages are so ugly.

Probably considered young by many, but even when I was younger, I hated red/amber lights...looked cheap to me. I always prefered green. When I saw the blue in the TL, I damn near $hit! I thought it was the coolest to have blue (and I still do).
