Blackened Exhaust tips

I have noticed that the bottom part of the rectangular chrome exhaust tips are black. It cleans off when I wash them. I would not expect that. Anyone else seeing it??

My paranoia says that the engine is not burning completely.
I have an 04 6MT with 6000 miles. It runs well. I get 22 MPG in combined highway and city. On a straight highway (1.5 hours on Mass Pike) it got 36 MPG (so I think it is running well).

Any ideas?

mostly road grime. water vapor from the exhaust gets onto the tips, then road grime sticks to the tips. all normal.

although the TL burns very very clean, it too stills has pollutants coming out...

Mine come clean as well. I just thought that was normal as long as you kept that part of the car clean on a regular basis. Seems to me if you kept it clean regularly then it would come right off and not cake up.

It's normal. Every Honda car I've ever owned exhibited this including my TL. I've had seven by the way.

Think about this. In 1996, a Ford Contour SE (V6 engine was the only engine installed in the SE that year) produced fewer contaminents running than a 1966 American V8 car did with with the engine not running. Now that was 11 model years ago. Cars today produce almost no pollution or contaminents at all. Hell, Mother nature was and is still the worse polluter there is.

I second the Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish. I had a lot of build up on my exhaust tips & couldn't get them completely clean. I tried a few different chrome cleaners. Mother's made them look brand new even without using any pressure.

This stuff works great! I have used it on motorcycle and car exhausts with outstanding results.

I just use a Scotch-brite pad. It works in about 5 seconds.
