BJ's ashtray/coinholder idea works great!

I know this is a somewhat mundane topic...but the lack of a nice, conveniently located, coinholder drawer has been my major disappointment with this car - more than tires flatspotting, headliners drooping, torque steer (I have detected almost none given my driving style), rattles (I have none), or cupholders (what was the issue with the cupholders?).

My last couple of cars had a nice little drawer to the left of the steering wheel that was perfect for loose change. The TL sadly didn't have one. Some time ago I saw where BJ 'invented' the cupholder/ashtray conversion idea. Well I ordered one of the ashtrays (~$14) and removed the small internal metal piece, as BJ described, and voila! it's perfect for change and it holds a huge amount of coins. I've had it for two weeks now and couldn't be happier. The car is now officially perfect (perfect enough anyway).

BTW my 90 day XM subscription ran out at the end of July. They called me this week and offered three more months for a total of ~$17 ($5.xx a month, no restart fee). I took the deal. I imagine this will be my last 'special deal' but this is a rate I can live with given the limited amount of XM listening I do.

And yes my wife and daughter think my semi-obsession with this car is at best very odd.

OK, the suns out - back to the Zaino!

OK. Don't wait too long, though.

But the thread wasn't hard to find. I don't remember anything anymore, except how to use

umm if i recall. my car has a coinholder in the middle armrest already. why want another? And besides IF you wanted more easy access, you could just slide up-ward that coin holder in the middle arm rest and it now becomes portable. You could just place it in the cup holder if you want. And also its already ORGANIZED. While now you have a shit load of coins and have to go diggin in to see what you get. Could of saved 15.00 dollars for that piece. so this is just my own... i just dont see it.

and who the hell is this ~~~~~~>

My change is for meters and to keep it OUT of my pockets. Cept meters in Boston are 25 cents for 15 min so even with the stock change drawer, can't stay too long. meters need to accept credit cars or bills damn it.

The coin holder in the center arm rest can be moved down, to the drivers door pocket. Just behind the little rubber bottom recess, there are two plastic slots which secure the coin holder to the movable door.

over here in Coral Gables, FLorida, we have meters. And this city has these things that look like umm a key, but round stick. about 1.75" long and about .25 of an inch in thickness. basically its registered to your credit card and you just stick it in the meter and u turn it like a key and each time u turn it its 25 cents. so no change needed.!!! hahah greattttttt.

Boy, you Florida people are smart. But what happens when all the people who are having coinholder problems move to Coral Gables to take advantage of their marvelous technology? It will get so crowded you will move somewhere else, to a place without a key to stick in the meter.

Great job!

To answer some of the challenges, the capacity of the factory springy coin holders is very weak needing frequent reloading every week. With the Optional Factory Modified Ash Tray, you can put a month's worth of tokens/quarters in there to do the job. No fumbling in the door/armrest, no dainty plucking the three coins you need, no issues with tokens of one size vs slots for smaller ones, etc. Here's the photo for those who asked:

Maybe you Floridians can use that key device to punch out the chads on your 2004 election ballots.
