Best engine oil price/quality combined.
OK, another engine oil question.
I don't race my TL. It's just a daily commuter.
Which oil do you think gives best quality for the price?

Very true. Any SM or SL rated oil today will do just fine. The reason I suggested the PP is you can usually find deals at Autozone with it costing the same as regular dino oil.

Best engine oil price/quality combined.
Who can say that there is $5 or more "quality" in Mobil1 than in whatever else (Pennzoil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc ....).
You either THINK it's worth the extra $5 or you don't.

My wife always takes the TL into the dealer to get the service/oil change done, but recently we got her into an SUV so the TL is all mine now. So the question I have is, if I switch from whatever the dealer has been putting in there to say a synthetic (Mobile1, Castrol Syntec, or even thinking of using AMSOIL), is there anything else I need to change along with it? I read that I would need a different oil filter with AMSOIL synthetic...is that the case with all synthetics? And is there anything else I would need to change out?

Mobil 1. Now if we're talking German Castrol (0w-30 Syntec), I would go Syntec all the way. It's proven to be an outstanding oil. The German stuff has a "European formula" or something to that effect stamped on it.

What you might've heard is that if you're going to try the full 20,000+ interval that their filter is recommended.
I think Amsoil's EAO line offers the best flow and filtration but Mobil 1 filters and K&N, are good too. Donaldson uses the same media as Amsoil (Donaldson supplies Amsoil) so if you can find a Donaldson that fits your car you could save a little. It may be a little difficult since Donaldson is primarily an industrial supplier.

Synthetic oil = chemically more consistent than dino oil. In other words, the manufacture knows that 99 % (or whatever percentage) of the molecules are of a certain length hydrocarbon. It doesn't have any real fantastic properties over dino oil which may or may not have that same level of consistency.
Synthetic oil is important in a turbo charged engine for example due to the extra heat, but in a daily commute car like your TL... you're wasting your $$$.

I think it varies dealer to dealer. I know for a fact that my Acura dealer uses bulk dino 10w-30 in everything that comes through the doors.

Yeah, really
People get so hung up on oil. Use a brand name that at least meets the specs of the manufacturer and you'll be fine. If it's dino, change it often. If it's synth, less often. It's just not that big a deal. Modern engines are very hardy, and modern oils are very good.

I'm with you ARX - Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic, great oil and priced about the same are reg premium oils. I also run it in my turbo cars, which tend to detroy oil and everything else (heat!), and have had good uoa results.
But, as others have said, using any reputiable oil and changing it according to the specs is fine.

I have a question, if the dealer is using full synthetic wouldnt they want to advertise that. The reason I ask is I "heard" that once you go full synthetic you should not go back to dino oil as you guys call it. Any substance to this claim and if so what is the reason?

They don't. Whomever said that ^ uptop doesn't know what they are talking about. The dealer uses bulk dino. If you ask for synthetic they will do it but charge extra. I saw the pricing table when I went in for my first change. Wasn't worth it. Actually doing it at the dealer isn't worth it at all. Buy the good stuff (I like Mobile1 syn) and put it in yourself and you'll be sitting at or below the same price for a dino changeout at the dealer....

Agree^^^
Don't be so sure dealers use full synthetic. The Jeep dealership I went to used a blend, synthetic was extra.
Never trust dealers, that why I do my own, its cheaper, and I KNOW what EXACTLY is going in. People at the service desk can say anything, which doesnt mean shit since they werent the ones that actually did the oil change.
Also they usually charge you +/-$20 for full synthetic, but like I said, you really have no idea what they are using unless you test it

Not to thread hijack, but I hate opening up a new oil thread. I'm coming up on my first oil change and wil be draining the break in oil. Being that this is a thicker kind of oil that may have small metal particles and what not, is there anything else to do besides just draining it?

Also, if your talking about the "special break in oil" (which i think you are) I didn't notice anything come out besides the oil, plus it really wasnt that thick. it was just as thin as any other oil change
