I assume there is a battery in the key fob that allows it to communicate with the car.

If so:

How long does the battery last? Should I replace it as a PM item, or wait until it dies?

My car is a 2004 TL with 50K miles.

I would say wait until it goes out. When it does, you can always get in the old fashioned way...
