Baby seats anyone?
Baby seats anyone?
Well, as much as I don't like it, our new '05 TL is the "sporty" family sedan. As is such, I will need to put a seat for my 1yr old son in the back. Does anyone have any suggestions for what has worked for them? On the side or in the middle? What about the leather, anybody put anything between the car seat and the leather seats to prevent imprinting? I've heard of using that memory foam but haven't been able to find any yet.
Thanks.
Thanks.
My TL is also our baby mobile, i recommend using the baby car seat in the middle of the rear seat, also a towel underneath the seat should help prevent distortion in your seat since the middle of the seat is vinyl.
Yap, added TL (kept'91 Integra coupe) since it was hard to put a 1 year old in the seat everytime. I place a thin pillow to protect the botton and the back of the seat. Works ok by the baby seat tends to slide a little. I also have it inthe middle and use driver side access. That way the belt buckes on driver side and it's much easier. Plu the little one gets to see the road better...

My kids are a bit older and use booster seats. I glued felt on the bottom of the seats to help protect the leather. I had towels under the seats originally but using the felt means there's less stuff to pull out when I have adults riding in the back.

My 3 yr old Grandson rides with me sometimes and at first I used the towel trick - actually multiple towels. We ended up buying our own seat so we didn't have to transfer my daughters seat back and forth. I modified the seat by putting sections of "water pipe" foam on all the "edges" that face the leather and taping them on. This has worked great and now that it is permanantly attached to the baby seat, I don't have to deal with the towels.

As a paramedic who has been to many car accidents, i don't reccomend using anything between the car seat and leather. It prevents the car seat from staying in place if your car is broad-sided. My TL is also my family car, sold my 380hp Ford Lightning for one, and i currently using and only reccomend a britax car seat. If you take care of the bottom of the car seat, keep it from getting scratched or nicked by laying it on it's back instead of it's bottom, it shouldn't damage the leather. I've had my TL for 8 months now and I apply all my weight onto the car seat, proper way to secure it, when strapping it down and there is no damage or "car seat memory" left on the leather. Those of you who don't place your car seat in the middle, or feel like your leather is more important than your child, I hope I don't meet them while i'm at work.
So far it seems nobody has decided to use the LATCH system for the infant car seats.
Before buying my 05TL, I had to put all my weight and try to stabilize the car seat, and then try to strap the seat belt in place, and still it didn't feel very secure. I hated to take it apart and put it back when i needed storage space. All this took me about 15-20 minutes! (no kidding) Anyways, I love the LATCH system, its so easy, now it just takes me 2 minutes, and it is very secure.
I put my car seat in the middle and nothing in between the leather and car seat. I thought about putting a towel but after reading the above post from the paramedic, I think its not worth it.

While I don't necessarily disagree with JDOWNLOW, perhaps he over states his case....First of all, while the middle seat is preferred, those of us with multiples don't have that luxury, although generally they ride in the Odyssey. My local EMT friend evaluated my car seat installation, and said it was the best one of the day, ( a safety fair...seat install evals...etc) and I use rubber backed bathmats......The seats move even less than directly on the leather, and protect the seats as well.
It's just a thought......

For those who are concerned with both their leather and their child go to Babies-R-Us and get a "Seat Saver". It's a formed rubber mat that goes over the seat. There are a couple of versions. Get the two piece one that has a removeable backrest portion. You don't really need it while the little one rides facing the rear. When they're older and ride facing forward you can put the backrest section on and turn the seat around.
The mat is shaped a bit like a tray and catches crumbs and other stuff that may get dropped. It holds the seat securely and will not let it slide around, even more so than the leather. And of course use the LATCH tethers and if possible place the seat in the middle. I also put the belt through the slots. I'm looking for a very small crash helmet to fit a 10-month old. And maybe a padded suit. That little girl is way more important than any car.

Thanks for all your comments. I actually went to BabiesRus the other day and picked up the Prince Lionhart car seat protector like SpecialFX mentioned. Unfortunately they only had Gray but that should look ok with the ebony interior. We plan on putting the little one in the middle too....will have to look into the pipe foam that lakeman suggested as added protection.
Didn't think about no longer having quick access to the truck; however, I have a blazer and saturn that could be used if we needed to transport something long.

My last work on this, hell with the car, always could get another, but not a grandson like the one I have.

I, too, use a towel between the car seats and the leather; however, I tighten the car seats so much that they're not going anywhere. Between the LATCH and tethers, the seats barely move at all (front to back, or side to side).
The only problem I have is that I'm somewhat worried that I've compressed the leather seats too much. But, like others have said, my kids are worth way more than anything else, so I don't care all that much.
