Auto Tranny
Is the auto tranny for the '04 TL really that bad? This is what one guy, who claimed to be working in the parts dept. for Acura said:
"he may not be, but I am, I work for the Parts Department for an Acura Dealership, we have 10 trannys sitting in our department for MDX's and TL's... I've given these to mechanics ever since I've started working and we receive two-three each day and send back two-three back to Honda each day...
hence the extended warranty of 100,000 miles and 7 years"

Have there been that many problems already w/the tranny?
Thanks.

For some perspective, I took a look at the repair histories at consumerreports.org (you have to subscribe).
Unfortunately, they do not rate the TL (seems like they used to). However, we have learned on this forum that the MDX is "just as bad" and all kinds of tranny problems there. The MDX has the top transmission reliability rating of "excellent" for all three model years (01-'03). The Honda Accord, with a transmission similar to the TL and also supposedly terrible, has a "very good" rating for transmission relaibility in '00 and '01 and "excellent" in '02 and '03.
In looking over the ratings, I was stunned by the horrible reliability of the BMW 7-series. The BMWs were around average somewhere. The two Acuras rated (MDX and RSX)were well above average.

Exactly, the reference is to the 2G TL, which had easily worn 3rd gear clutch packs, which with use and heat, led to premature transmission failure. The 3G TL has had no widespread tranny issues. The only issues reported here so far are one report of a leaky 5AT tranny, which was replaced by Acura, and at least one person with a replaced 6MT tranny. That's pretty much it.

Be honest to you guys, 1 leaking 5AT tranny, and 3 6MT. If we say there is about 2000 04TLers on this forum since Oct. 03, it's 0.2%... if this percentage could be apply to other 04TLs, Acura has sold more than 50k 04TL, it's about 100 04TLs having replaced Tranny, maybe less or more... remember, this is the first year model, the leaking or failure issues could be caused by the unexperienced or not-well-adjusted assembling lines in Ohio... Doesn't Acura import tranny part from Japan and assemble here?
We don't know... however, this number is much much less than 2G TLs...
