Anyone regret getting a 6 speed?
Just traded in my Sti for a 6 speed TL in Anthracite Metallic. It was time for me to get a "family car". I chose the 6 speed because I still wanted the fun factor along with a fairly comfy ride. Not sure if that was a good idea, anyone else have second thoughts on getting a 6 speed? How hard would it be to find someone willing to trade cars? I don't want to go back to the dealer and have them kill me on another trade in.
I opted for the 5at over the 6mt in my type s. Im 23 by the way. Why??
Well because I do alot of driving and its nice to just put it in drive and go. I use bluetooth alot and its just nice to sit and relax. Especially in traffic. If i want to have some fun I put it in Manual mode with the shifters. I still have alot of fun with those and cant say i regret it over the 6mt. I drove both, the 6mt and the 5at.
Yes the 6mt was fun but the 5at is wayyy more practical for me. Makes it kind of seem less tuner and more luxury.
also since I was 16 ive been driving manual transmissions. This is nice now being auto

Nope. no regrets. even in crappy DC area traffic (which thankfully for me i go against traffic
) and avoid the beltway like the plague unless i NEED to be on there.

Do not own a TL- had more regrets with automatic cars I owned. I prefer MT and I learned to drive stick on NYC Streets. Drove from NJ to NC yesterday in my 6 MT TSX. Lots of road construction so traffic.
What I think is when you downgrade and leave the turbo car for a family sedan, it's a whole different feel. Just give it a couple more months. I can tell that you'll want more power and this car will hold you back on some accounts. A lot of TL 6 spd is hard to find but I see they come lots in Athracite Metalic.
I have a chance to choose between AT and 6spd when I was in the market fora TL, both of them have similar mileage with the same price except the 6spd is NBP Ebony/Silver interior got A-spec lip kit and the other was MRP AT with Taupe interior. I went with the AT, why? because this is my family sedan so my wife must be able to drive the car any time. She can't drive MT because medical condition on her left hip, if I am single the choice probably was a 6spd but then again its nice to going a long cruise and not worry about shifting especially you are in an area where you never been to keep looking for street name, house number. I think AT and MT each has their own advantage but pick one that suit you best according to your needs and personal preference.
No regret here!
You can probably arrange a trade with a AZ member. Many here have regretted their choice of automatic and thought of changing to a manual. There are not many 6mt's for sale and it's impractical, and costly, to swap transmissions and all the peripheral stuff it requires.

you pre-maturely ejaculated.
Please, wait for responses next time and try again.
at times, I really hate my 6MT.
its not the smoothest, or friendliest clutch to learn.
after 9 years of driving a stick shift vehicle, I still feel like a noob sometimes in the TL.
But when I do get those shifts right, or im out having fun with the car is when I really enjoy the vehicle.

Is it because Manual TL's are harder to drive than other cars? My TL is my first manual car so I really can't compare but based on what other members said TL's clutch isn't easy to master.
I regretted getting a manual after first 2 weeks but after it became second nature, I absolutely love it.

I never regretted getting my 6 speed, even when stuck in traffic. I'm probably biased though because I have no intentions of buying a car with less than 3 pedals ever.
OP, what is it about the 6MT that makes you have second thoughts?

which makes the car hard to master.
American cars are very easy to learn the clutch, because of the high engagement point.
I went from a 5AT to a 6MT. I drive in city traffic a lot...and I didn't think I'd like it, but it's fine. I had an S2000 as a second car and I used to prefer driving the 5AT TL in cities...but now that I'm only using one car, and it's manual, it's surprisingly fine. I don't miss the 5AT at all.
Every car I owned prior to the TL was MT. When I was initially shopping for TL's I was planning on getting a 6MT so I drove several of them. Coming from a modded twin turbo Audi S4, something about the clutch in the TL did not feel right to me, it just didn't feel smooth and precise like the Audi. After I took the TL for a few highway sprints I realized that it lacked the power to throw me in the back of my seat and accepted the fact that it would never be a fast car. It was sexy and most importantly reliable being that it was a Honda so that's why I bought it. My Audi was horribly unreliable. Once I came to that realization, I opted for the smooth shifting 5AT and have never regretted that decision. I figured down the line I will buy another MT but with much more power and a rwd or awd platform.
my car found me, so i went with what it was, a 5at. honestly, I really like it now that i got the hang of the paddles. if it was a 6spd, it would turn into another race car, and I really dont want to turn this nice car into another autox slut. besides, this car will never hang with my civics. shes just to heavy.
...although, I did get my first taste of oversteer in this car today on my way to work. made me has big smiles

I kind of regret getting my TL in automatic. The only upside to this since I commute alot and majority of the time im sitting in traffic automatic would be the way to go.
My s4 is 6spd and it's annoying sitting in traffic. When I mean traffic I'm referring to NYC /Staten Island/ belt parkway traffic.

OMG MAN I love loooooooooooooooooooooove my 6mt,,,, I feel the TL is an amazing manual car to drive compared to other manual cars If I may suggest to do something to improve your shifting that will ensure you wont wanna trade for an AT is comptech short shifter, GM syncromesh Friction modified trans fluid, and corsport bushings with these 3 modification you will absolutely fall like I fell in love with this car , even if you dont want to modify it still has an advantage over other MT cars ....good luck man hope it all works out for ya
In my honest opinion, more people on this site would probably regret getting the automatic transmission over the manual. If you head over to the Car Talk forum there is a nice thread about manual transmissions, but the way I see it is that most people on Acurazine prefer the manual tranny, which wasn't really the case when our 3Gs were sold. Don't quote me on this, but I think 1 in every 40 TLs produced were a manual and even then, Acura charged more for the 6 speed rather than the 5AT (they do currently for the 4G). Z
I have no regrets. Every car I've own has been a manual. I feel like you conform to society in automatics and yes I drive in DC traffic. Some days it takes me 2 hours to get to work instead of the 30 mins without traffic. My wife knows how to drive a manual, she says she feels alive driving my car instead of her paddle shift RDX. My car has 86k miles on it and the tranny shifts smooth as butter with OEM Honda fluid.
Thanks for the advice man, I haven't heard that a million times.
P.S. I'm sure you can find many others here who are worse than me. I posted a simple joke because I could see the hoards of 3G people blasting him, or so I thought. You took it like I was serious. I myself have an automatic because of my needs.

No regrets EVER. I love my 6MT. My wife's Pilot would be a 5/6MT if Honda would just grow a pair and sell one!!!
I actually saw another 6MT w/ A-spec kit on the street yesterday. I couldn't believe my eyes as the car gently rolled backwards towards me when the light went green (on a hill). It's literally been years since I've seen another 6MT here in the desert. Felt pretty cool to have two 6MT A-specs pulling onto the freeway together. Too bad the other driver must have been on the phone (or drunk) since they seemed oblivious and couldn't keep it in one lane through the weaving construction zone.

The 04-06 6MT + navi was the "type S" of those model years, AKA the "Sport" trim and had some goodies the A-Spec 5AT still didnt have. New, it would probably carry a premium at a dealer even though MSRP was about the same.
People here like the 5AT, but it seems at least a few were just bought out of circumstance--they couldnt wait or find a good 6MT.
OP, I don't know if you will come back again but...
You got out from a STI.
You enjoyed it pretty much.
Now you want a family car and to relax while driving.
If this was an Audi MT, I would say go ahead but
as some mentioned about the clutch on TL... don't
just Audi...not even BMW
Since 1999 I never felt better MT than Audi's
Dad had a Alfa Roemo 156 and that car had the softest clutch ever.
First time drivers like when my dad gives the car to his friends, couldn't take off at first time. Softer than usual clutches.
Since no Alfas here and not thinking of getting an Audi.
AT TL is good for you

Wow, I wasn't expecting this many responses. Thank you all for the great responses. Everyone seems to be way more mature then in the STi forums. Anyways, to stay on topic. I've never owned an automatic car before and was a bit sketchy on how I would feel getting one. I test drove both but eventually fell in love with the 6 speed although I don't think I gave it enough time in the auto to truly see what it would be like to own. I sit in Denver traffic everyday, although its not quite as bad here as in other places, it still isn't fun. Another big factor is the wife, she has never learned and teaching her on a new car doesn't seem logical.
I'm in Denver btw, if anyone is serious about trading, PM and we can get something going. 06 TL Anthracite Metallic Non-Navi w/77k miles.
