Anyone have (or trade in) an S2000 ?
Sorry this was related to the TL. Someone asked this morning about the TL - he has an S2000 and another car).
I primarily wanted to know if it's worthwhile to do such a swap - "is the TL [6M] an adequate replacement for an S2000 ?"
He understands it's FWD vs. RWD, but has grown tired of the S2000.

I have an S2000 and recently test drove a TL. I still like the S2000 better, but if he's tired of the S2000 I guess a TL would be pretty good replacement.
I test drove a manual TL the other day - it had pretty much the same pickup as the S2000 - but of course the shifting was slower, and the engine noise was a lot quieter
It handled pretty well, but not as crisp as the S2000.
If you need to feel comfortable and that's why you're getting rid of it, I think the TL's a pretty good replacement. Has the power and decent handling, and feels very luxurious.

I am sorry, but this is like asking is foie gras as good as liver pate from Dean & DeLuca's? They are different animals altogether. The TL is a nice sedan, the S2000 one of the most kickass sports cars ever made, with timeless lines, NSX-like assembly quality, and handling that made an owner of an E55 AMG cry (my brother). On the backroads of the Blue Ridge heading towards Roanoke, I used all my racing and Bondurant expertise to scare the living bejeezus out of him. Maybe he was crying from fear, but he did have a rather large smile on his face. But he gives up nearly 2000 pounds to my <2800, and that much avoirdupois makes the comparison to the E55, let alone any TL, a study in futility.
It would take one of the Realtime TSX's driven by Kleinubing to pass my S2K in a corner.
I like my TL, it is great commuter car for me, but when tell my wife I am going "for a drive", the pocket rocket wins the day. It is good to be me, in that respect (but I'll trade my old warwounded knees). :killer:

Give me a break... The s2000 is a decent ride but there are lots and lots of cars that would make a s2000 look silly.
I haven't seen an S2000 that could stay within 5-10 seconds of me at the track. Also there tend to blow their engines up, at least the two at my last event attended did.

Why don't you name a few RWD cars that can outperform an S2000 on the track that is within it's price range?
The only S2000's that had reported engine problems are the early MY '00 S2000's. Other than that, the F20c has literally been flawless! The motors that you have seen blow-up have either been due to driver error or an early 2000 production car.
And Road Rage said "my S2000." Who says his S2000 is stock?

RR was comparing his car to a $100k race car and that anything short of that was not up to the task.
I submit that a $10k Porsche 944 Turbo with $5k of suspension upgrades would spank an S2000 on the race track (not drag strip).
A BMW E36 M3 is less than $20k and with a proper suspenion it would also be tough competition.

Somehow I had a feeling he was going to throw in used cars once he couldn't think of any brand-new ones. Because in that case how about we throw a $5,000 supercharger and/or $5,000 worth of suspension on a used $20,000 S2000 and compare then too.
Seriously though, new cars please.

Even bone stock they are killer. i owned an E36 M3 (first one on East Coast) and this car would own it. Taking a used car and then putting $5k of this and that on it and chair racing is lame. Find me a 944 Turbo for $10k that could last on a track without puking its guts out - the last 3 I saw had paint so chalky my 6 year old used it to trace her friend in our driveway. The smoking turbo bearings or oil leak burnoff was an effective skeeter killer, I will grant you that.
My car has some mods, including X-brace, Spoon CF intake, gutted airbox, and Mugen titanium exhaust. It does not have the acceleration of the turboed Subaru, but it has as much roadholding, and does not look like a Swiss Army knife. In 20 years those cars will look goofy and be worthless. I'd rather bet on a TT Supra.

What does paint have to do with anything? Why don't you meet me at VIR sometime and I will show you what a $15k 944 Turbo will do to your S2000. I don't chair race and I don't make bets I won't win.
New cars that are quicker than an S2000.... That wasn't RR's claim, his claim was that anything less than a RTR TSX driven by a pro driver wouldn't be quicker than his S2000. I called BS. Nothing mentioned about a new car , my guess is there are several that are in the ballpark but I haven't driven them on the track so it would be tough for me to compare.

The S2000 is my favorite modern roadsters (I've yet to drive the Elise) but the S2000 is one of the most daily driver unfriendly modern production car out there. I loved autocrossing the S2000 or going for that back road weekend drive but driving in any civilized manner is a chore.
I originally had an 00TL which I sold because I wanted a S2K. and when I finally did get the s2k, I wanted my TL back! haha.
the s2k is really an awesome car-and as soon is I have the chance, I would like to get another one, because I do miss it.
for me, at the time, it just wasn't the right car. I travel a lot, and it was my ONLY car.
to be able to have the TL and the S2K would be perfect.

The S2k has great handling, to be sure, but the statement about the Speed Touring TSX was a bit of an overstatement. On a longer, faster, european style road course (Road America), the S2k is not nearly as competitive as it is on tighter courses (Mid-Ohio) or AutoX courses. At Road America I don't believe a stock S2k can hang with a stock NSX, E46 M3, 996, or equivalent.
For tighter courses, I would also not underestimate the handling prowess and speed of the 951 (read 944) chassis, particularly in later turbo form and I believe an old E30 M3 would also be a tough competitor in terms of handling.

Engines tends to blow up? That's the funniest thing I've read all week.

No doubt there are cars like that, I run into them most weekends I race.
The guys that blew their S2000 motors (spun rod bearings most likely) sure didn't think it was funny...
