Anyone consider trading in your Type-S for a Genesis Coupe?
My gf just bought a 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Auto base. It's a pretty nice car even though it is missing a few of the now standard luxury items I have gotten used to. My TL is paid of but I am not really in a position to buy anything right now. Maybe near the end of the year. I would go with a little higher end model than she has. I hear the 3.8 is pretty sweet. Anybody have thoughts or actually traded your TL for a Gen?

I was thinkig about doing the same thing, btw gen coupe only has 2.0t and 3.2, there not a option to get the 3.8. I love the way they drive and look, the only thing holding me back is it's a Hyundai.

I think they are kinda cool looking cars but I couldnt for the life of me bring myself to buy a Hyundai. I know I know im sure they are good quality cars, but I just couldnt do it. have fun explaining to your friends how you just bought a Hyunai haha. Even that new Kia Optima looks cool in the commercials but I couldnt do that either.

They're really nice cars. I think Hyundai has really stepped their game up with some of their newer models. Me personally I always preferred to have a 4 door.

I would do it. I'm pretty much done with FWD cars - for a while anyway. I'm actually looking into higher HP (300+) RWD coupes right now. My TL has been great but it won't be too much longer before I move on from Honda/Acura.
If I were to do a Gen Coupe it would definitely be the 3.8. The 2.0T is way too weak.

A family friend recently bought a Genesis 3.8, so naturally I had to take it out for a test drive. I never in my life thought I'd ever kick the tail out in a Hyundai, and I never thought I'd ever get out of a Hyundai with a smile on my face....I was wrong!!! A really fun car...and it's RWD !! But it still has that Hyundai stigma

Hyundai needs a luxury brand now.....(to get rid of that stigma).

Honda and Acura is the only foreign cars I really like besides the germans. I wouldn't ever like facing the ridicule of driving a south korean car. Now my Honda and Acura thats a diff story! Regardless of ratings/reviews I just don't like the look of them or the brand.

LOL why do you think the Genesis Sedan V8 didn't have a front badge? It's a nice luxury car, totally copied off of a Mercedes E class but it didn't stand a chance on the market as a Hyundai so they ditched it.
BTW, the new Equus from Hyundai is a very nice luxury car but again, no Hyundai anywhere on it. It's all its own Equus badges on it.
But yes, they make some nice luxury cars, but definitely need a new name for them.

Before buying my 04 TL I thought about buying a Gen coupe (also a G35 coupe), but those cars were soooo boring when I sat in them. I couldn't walk away from the notion of owning a TL, something about it just kept drawing me in.

Not true...While Hyundais sell well due to their striking new exterior designs, their wonderful warranties, and their reliability, many car enthusiasts still turn their noses at them...its not just me...but remember...Hondas werent well received by enthusiasts when they first strated coming to North America, and look what happened!

You just made the case explaining the irrational "nose turning" at Hyundai. What Hondas are for "enthusiasts" these days? The Accord Coupe?

I like the Genesis Coupe. I like the Genesis sedan also. But I just am not a fan of their interiors for some reason. The 2012 Genesis sedan is hot as hell...
I disagree. Hyundai hasn't gained the amount of respect its Japanese competition already has established. There most certainly is a stigma with Kia and Hyundai- for now at least. They're in the exact same position Honda and Toyota were a couple decades ago. By no means are they doing poorly, but they have a bit of work to do before people regard the Hyundai name with the same confidence and familiarity as the Honda name.

Maybe I should start a thread, anyone consider trading in for a STI, 2012 TL, 2012 Mazda3, because those are all cars I have considered. The stigma is deserved. Really anyone considering trading in the TL for a Corvette or a Minivan. I'm still plan on keeping the 2 Acuras

The work you refer to, which is needing to be done by Hyundai, is being done right before your eyes.

Disagree, Hyundai new Sonata, Optima Turbo does not have the HP/torque marketing says it does. Consumer reports and Edmunds validate. 1700 dollars per car marketing. Look at the warranty it applies to the first owner only. Faster, better, cheaper, pick two not three as Hyundai would have you believe. Again not saying any car company is all that just Hyundai is a lot of hype.

Where exactly? College girls rockin elantras and sonatas doesnt count and a Hyundai Pikes Peak win has yet to transpire...ie. Stigma has yet to be disproven...

Call me old-fashion but when I'm car shopping or any kind of shopping, I'm shopping for myself, not for what other people may think of it. Wanna know why I bought my TL? (A) because I liked the way it looked and (B) my wife's maiden name is Tonya L. Steward (would have gotten a Type-S if I knew one existed at the time). Never looked or thought about a Honda product before the TL. In fact, if I hadn't gotten married, a 2G Tiburon was going to be my next car. I'm a huge fan of the underdog and with the right performance mods (which the Tiburon has a much larger market due to it falling in the Tuner category), it could give the Type-S a run for it's money and then some.
In terms of the 2.0L being weak (which I can only guess is meant in comparison to the TL), I look at it this way. A Genesis 2.0 at 210 hp runs at the least 22k. It comes from the factory turbo-ed so the engine internals are already prepped for the boost "punch". Upgrade kits are readily available like the Garrett GT3582R kit which promotes 350+ hp over stock for $1,995. Throw in the add'l bells-and-whistles and you're looking at a 560+ hp Genesis for under 26k estimating.
The 3G TL (if bought new) started at no less than 27k and that's w/o NAV. Take into account the amount of engine work needed for boost prep. Take into account that the J&R turbo kit runs 5,799 plus $1,390 for the ECU which I see a thread for to TRY and reach 500 hp. Doing a running tally, we're at $34,189. Now we have those bells-and-whistles again, probably looking somewhere between 35k - 36k. My numbers are subject to scrutiny but it looks like you come out 10k cheaper with a vehicle that can outperform the TL. And of course, the obvious, RWD.
If you'd refuse to entertain a product because of some "stigma" even after hearing good things about it, then I'd tell you there were some cliffs in Norway looking for a few, good lemmings.

it's a car-drive it
we own a acura and hyundai-both excellent cars-We traded our 05 hyundai elantra GT with 100K+ problem free miles for the '11 sonata. We owned a 05 honda civic ex-se, which was bought new about the same time as the elantra. We traded the civic at 36,000 miles for the tsx. It was a P.O.S. one problem after another. Love our tsx.

Hyundai has come a long ways since the Excel days but no thanks. Show me the cliffs because, if I have a choice, Hyundai wouldn't be at the top of my list 10 out of 10 times just because they just do not appeal to me.

Hyundai is making some great inroads to looks, performance, and quality. But a TL (let alone a TL-2) to a Genesis Coupe would not be in my cards. These are two completely different cars: 4 door .vs. 2 door being the obvious difference. I need the 4 doors on a regular basis so a 2 door is out.
Now the Genesis 4 door is another story- I would want to see how they hold up for a few more years before committing to that move.
