Another 3rd/4th pressure switch and ATF question
Another 3rd/4th pressure switch and ATF question
Hey guys,
As some of you know, i recently bought a 07-TLS @ 108k miles, i been spending the last few days doing stuff to it to clean it up abit so i can start with the mods in spring...
I took it in to get a tranny fluid drain and fill (because i have no space at home right now) and the mechanic, advised me and even showed me the one of the seals on the transmission is leaking, so he advised to get that fixed first then do the drain and fill....
so he is ordering the seal and on friday this week im to come back to do the seal replacement and 1x3 or even 2x3 if needed.
I mentioned to him that i read all over here about people using Redline D4 and he said he could do it for me no problems, the thing is he hasn't used that brand before so he doesn't know its pros or cons. He recommend me to just use Honda's OEM fluid and stated that the oem fluid has alot of additives that others don't.....anyways, for now because i have no space to do this type of work at home im just going to take his advice..
I also be looking over this site and alot of people are advising to switch out the 3rh/4th pressure switches.....i think i got the part numbers right, but my question is....
Should i do this before the drain and fill? or does it matter? what i want to do is take care of the drain and fill along with the seal leak now, come spring when i have a garage and room and all my tools in one area, i can switch these 3rd/4th's out...
Thanks
another thing.....i read on a DIY on the switches and the OP stated these part numbers. i have a 07 type s, so wondering if these switches are different then the base 07-08. also do i need one of each part or because this is now he typed it in.

Those part numbers look correct. 3 switches and 3 gaskets.
As for fluids....that's your choice. I went with the Honda DW1. You will fine more info on here about Redline or something else. You choose. I am staying out of that one.
do a 1x3 with redline D4 now. give it a few thousand miles to mix in...and go back and do a 2x3. rinse, lather, repeat...and do your 3x3. you have over 100k on the clock and you want to introduce the fluid slowly to your transmission. like bugsbunny getting in a hot bath tub. this way, you can see how your tranny will react to the new fluid. (non-OEM)
do the 3rd/4th switches now as well.
fix the seal leak now too.
do all of this at the same time. might as well take care of it while you're in there.

yeah, after reading the DYI, its something that i can do it myself later, i just wasn't sure if i should do it now or while im also doing the fluid drain and fill........
although.........im not sure if its me but i feel the 5AT transmission in the TL-S somewhat lags....its been a while since im back in a honda/acura and first time with a paddle shift from a honda/acura....when using the paddle shift option i feel that when you upshift there is a lag between gears, i recently owned a IS250 and i thought i felt that be be a quicker shift......also sometimes i feel that the AT mode switches gears somewhat rough........then again it could just be mine, so hopeing after the drain and fill and after the switches in spring it will be much much smoother

^yeah there will always be a lag present between shifting in manual mode.
however, i did notice a difference after i switched to redline fluid. quicker shifts, almost like each gear falls into the next with little wait time in between.
i drive in manual mode 95% of the time...i should have gotten a 6MT.

Just to clarify: Noober's reply is misleading to jus_incredible. Just so nobody misunderstands, these are not engine oil pressure switches that are being referred to. They are transmission pressure switches for 3rd and 4th gear. For anyone new it is probably one of the biggest subjects on this forum a search will pull up a LOT.

I read his response and thought "Uhhh, no, that's not what the pressure switches are..."
Right, that's why I didn't say Noober was wrong, just misleading. As you can see jus_incredible's replies that his MID is showing 90% oil life, so obviously he thought he was talking about an engine oil pressure switch. A lot of people search the forum when wanting to attempt a DIY but don't comment. Just making sure they're on the same page and not confused.
Good catch. I can just see a bunch of people ordering oil pressure switches lol.
I'm almost certian the transmission pressure switches control the throttle closing on upshifts. As my switches age not only do shifts get more sloppy but I can hear and feel the throttle open before the shift is completed. Shifting with no torque going through the transmission is a great thing for life and a good band aid fix for a weak transmission as well. So not only do you have slower, sloppy shifts causing more wear, the throttle may be reapplied a little too soon when the switches get out of calibration as well.
I know the first post is a couple years old but I would love to hear his mechanic's response if he asked exactly what additives the factory fluid has over D4. Probably one of these looks

Why not just do it all together? the switches aren't expensive and they take 15 minutes to install. Plus who knows the last time they've been replaced so your transmission might be slowly crapping out and getting sluggish while you "wait a while" to replace the switches. My transmission is something i don't wait for, i replace whatever i have to replace as soon as possible to prevent it from going bad on me.
